"How time flies… I was thinking about this just as my plane took off from Liszt Ferenc Airport. I headed towards Norway, and within it towards Oslo, because last year I decided that I would also participate in one of their biggest extreme music events, the Inferno Metal Festival , in 2026. If you feel the call, then you have to go, and I felt it terribly. A year has passed, or less, because Easter came earlier (thanks to the Moon), so my existing excitement was mixed with some surreality, because I couldn’t put it into words that the weeks/months had flown by so quickly and a few hours later I was already walking in the northern territory, in the area bordered by Mollergata / Bernt Ankers gate / Maribos gate, in the pouring rain. Meanwhile, a vague image of a program plan floated before me, which I finally managed to implement."

"Among the huge number of tourists arriving at Oslo Central Station to enjoy the Easter break, you can spot one or two metalheads in their usual outfit.
Walking further into the city centre, you can find bigger groups gathering in local bars and cafés. Fans from Sweden, the UK, the USA, Argentina, Mexico, Greece, Turkey, and several other countries are getting ready for Inferno Metal Festival, some for the very first time, others coming back for their 8th or 9th edition.

This is a special year for the festival, as it marks its 25th anniversary of bringing together well-established acts of extreme metal, as well as new and upcoming bands. As a matter of fact, we could say that one of the most fun aspects of the festival is discovering new bands that have their own take on the genre."

"The 2026 edition of the revered Inferno Metal Festival Norway kicked off on Thursday, April 2nd in Oslo, Norway at the Rockefeller, John Dee, Goldie, Vaterland and Brewgata venues in the heart and hub of the city in a rain/snow mix of grey and black! Oslo itself is a bustling hub of arts and professionals, with historical landmarks peppered throughout the city that date back to their Viking roots. Inferno is a mix of extreme music and culture, which gathers metal music professionals and media from all over the world. In other words, it’s a place for fans and people young and old in the music business. And everyone had Jan-Martin Jensen on their mind, as the founder and long-time organizer passed away in February 2025 following a battle with cancer, so tributes poured in from bands and fans."

"This year's edition of the Inferno Festival is the first without the full oversight of Jan-Martin Jensen, a historic figure who passed away last February. Jensen was the creator and longtime coordinator of what has become one of the most important extreme metal events in Europe and beyond.
If there were even remote concerns about the festival's future, all doubts were dispelled after these four days of concerts, which, as always, drew audiences from around the world.
With one of the most interesting lineups in recent years, the 2026 Inferno Festival succeeded in organizing an event packed with musical and non-musical events, with a schedule that was never overwhelming (as is often the case with other major European festivals), leaving just the right amount of room for those who want to attend as many concerts as possible, as well as those who came solely to see their favorite bands."

"It hurts to write this, but it has been 15 years since I last visited the Inferno festival in Oslo. Last year I saw all the photos passing by of friends having a great time, great bands playing, etc. and I knew I had to go back.

So, I told a certain musician: IF you play next year, I will be there! Last summer they got announced and of course, I kept the promise I made. So here I am, back in Oslo and at the festival."

"The fifth time at Inferno was a great trip. Lots of friends, a nice number of gigs, a decent amount of beer and a decent number of challenges. If anything, the expensive beers took a hit on my wallet (around 11-15 euros each). On the other hand, I have to say that The Hub festival hotel was a great place to stay and the breakfast was so hearty with several dishes that I didn't have to lose any weight on the trip. The travel company was also top-notch, so there are few complaints."

"In Oslo, since 2001, the religious and ritualistic atmosphere of Easter has been accompanied by a deliberate ‘aesthetic darkness’. The reason behind this situation—which left a friend of mine, who was in town on holiday at the time, puzzled, remarking, “I couldn’t make sense of why there were so many metalheads on the streets at Easter”—is the Inferno Metal Festival, which spreads across various parts of the city.

I chose the phrase “more than just a festival” for the title of this piece because what we have here is a structure quite different from the usual metal music events."
