Little bit from Latvian basketball history...
During the 1920s, students of Riga became Latvia's first basketball players. Since then, Riga has been the country's capital city of basketball. Countless gyms during the season and outdoor courts during the months of summer are full with basketball players enjoying the game and playing on a daily basis.
Riga has traditionally been the international mirror of Latvian basketball.
On the 5th of January 1925 a small gym in the Centre of Riga was the place where one of the first European international basketball games was played (Latvia vs. Estonia).
Latvia is first European champions in 1935.
In 1937, Riga hosted the second European Championship and, in honour of this event, a part of an old factory was rebuilt as a modern sports gym with 3,000 seats and two practice courts.
After World War II and Latvian incorporation into the Soviet Union, Riga became one of the largest basketball center's in the USSR. In 1960, FIBA Secretary General William Jones named Riga the capital of European basketball because for the first and, so far, only time in the history of European basketball, clubs from the same city were concurrent European Men's and Women's club champions. This was achieved by ASK Riga men's and TTT Riga women's teams.
Since 1958, Riga has regularly hosted European Cup games. Basketball has been played in football stadiums, as well as in the cozy sports gym "Daugava" where a basketball museum is in the making. In 2006, "Arena Riga" opened its doors and symbolically the first major sports event held there was the Baltic Basketball League's All-Star game.
Since 2008, "Arena Riga" has hosted European and World's youth championships on a regular basis. In 2009, the venue set a new EuroBasket Women attendance record: the game between Russia and Latvia was viewed by 8,713 fans.
