Mackenzie & Ebert to Enhance the Links at Lundin Golf Club
Lundin Golf Club, in the village of Lundin Links in Fife, host of the annual East of Scotland Amateur Championship, has announced extensive plans to enhance its course, originally designed by Old Tom Morris and extended by James Braid.
The club has hired renowned international golf course architects Mackenzie & Ebert to handle the phased approach to updating the links, with work set to begin in late December 2023. Mackenzie & Ebert advise 8 of the 10 courses currently on The Open rota resulting in major changes at Royal Portrush, Royal Liverpool and Royal Birkdale, along with other well-known links courses such as Royal Aberdeen and Royal Dornoch amongst others.
Martin Ebert and Mike Howard of Mackenzie and Ebert Limited have visited the links on multiple occasions to assess the project.
The company has subsequently produced a masterplan, which involves alterations to the positioning and removal of some bunkers, restoration of some rough edged bunkers and other natural features, and the introduction of some new tees.
Gerald MacCrossan, Captain of Lundin Golf Club commented: “The entire club is very excited by this project. We believe Mackenzie & Ebert’s plans will enhance our links and elevate its reputation as one of the finest links courses in the country.
The works will also involve the introduction of EcoBunkers as a long term sustainable solution to the lack of turf available on Lundin’s site to handle the constant requirement for revetted face bunker rebuilding. The continuation of work to naturalise and improve the path network across the links is also an important feature of the planned improvements.
Martin Ebert has commented: “Lundin has a proud place in the game with a wonderful heritage founded on the design skills of Old Tom Morris and James Braid. The close proximity of the coast line to the first four holes and the beautiful views over the Firth of Forth from so many parts of the course make for a most enjoyable playing experience. We very much look forward to the project to take the layout to even greater heights while respecting the original design principles.”
The planned three-phase project will commence this winter, with the intention being to complete the Mackenzie & Ebert masterplan over the next two winters, with no disruption to members or visitors during the main playing season.
