All profit will go towards our project to support the declining bee-population, whilst offering vulnerable groups in society (mainly the Salvation Army, Leger Des Heils) an opportunity to develop skills required to be (re)integrated into the labour market.

Can't Stop, Won't Stop Buzzing

A couple days ago, Kom ErBij had the wonderful opportunity to participate to a festival organized by the UBV, the study association for Utrecht University’s biology students. We got the chance to present our project in the beautiful botanical garden and shared our stand with a bee working group!
Our team is always grateful for such initiatives which allow us to talk to people and spread awareness of our actions!

Campus is a cool place to beeeeee!

As we all know, the bee population has been decreasing rapidly, threatening biodiversity and our very own agriculture. Enactus UCU hence decided to take action to help out their dire situation! Project Kom Erbij has been running for a year and a half now and successfully managed to set up two bee colonies last year.

We collaborate with the Salvation Army, to provide vocational rehabilitation to disadvantaged people, whilst simultaneously increasing the bee population. After a successful season and harvest, unfortunately our poor bees did not survive the winter.. But fear not! New bees are on their way, and they might even be coming to campus.

Bees are an important part of sustainability, and given the recent push by faculty and RepowerUCU towards a greener campus, we think this is the best time to bring our bees to UCU. Not only will the bees make an impact on our local environment, but all UCU students will get to witness the beekeeping process and reality of our project!

Bees on campus, it sounds a little scary we know! But don’t worry, the risks are minimal and we are working hard with members of the management team to reduce these! The current idea would be to place the beehives in our beloved EcologiCo garden, or in another fenced area, because bees don’t sting unless they feel attacked. This location is also relatively isolated from the rest of the more active part of campus, and since bees fly in a 5km radius around their home, they will be busy exploring lots of the surrounding areas.

We hope, with the support of the management team, to be introducing bees very soon on our campus! The seasons are changing, the sun is shining and the bees’ seasonal clock is ticking to produce some of that delicious honey!

Bzzzzz... We've got news for you! We're proud to announce that green light has been given, and the bees of Kom ErBij are officially coming to the UCU campus this summer. This also means that we will welcome our colleagues from Leger des Heils on UCU ground; we're very excited about this and hope you are, too. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to message the Kom ErBij team!

Stay tuned for more info about the bee's arrival, and maybe even about a 'hivewarming' event, who knows? ;)
