Één van de mensen die heel hoog op ons verlanglijstje stond, was Tim Staffell. Dus toen we hem afgelopen maart op de Queendag hadden, was het echt een droom die waarheid werd.

Het concert dat Tim gaf is opgenomen en gemonteerd door Dennis Hahn. We kunnen het nu met toestemming van Tim delen.

One of the people on top of our wishlist was Tim Staffell. So when he was there last March, it was a dream come true.

2026 is een bijzonder Freddie Mercury jaar. Niet alleen zou onze muzikale held op 5 september zijn tachtigste verjaardag vieren, het is op 24 november ook precies 35 jaar geleden dat hij tot ons grote verdriet aan de gevolgen van aids overleed. Op Freddies Dinner staan we altijd stil bij zijn overlijden, maar meer nog vieren we zijn leven. Om dit speciale jaar extra luister bij te zetten hebben we dit jaar naast een geweldige muzikale gast, ook een extra middagprogramma met een bijzondere lezing over de impact van hiv/aids in de wereld.

Muzikale gast

Bernd van den Bos, die momenteel alle theaters in Nederland vult met zijn prachtige, virtuoze pianovertolkingen van Queen nummers en zijn persoonlijke Queen-verhalen, komt op Freddies Dinner spelen. Voorafgaand aan het diner is hij een kwartier te beluisteren, maar na afloop treedt hij maar liefst een uur op!

Lezing door Peter Freestone

Voor het eerst in ons land geeft Peter Freestone de interactieve lezing van het TFA Project (Titanic - Freddie - AIDS), geïnitieerd destijds in 2019 door Milan Devine. Hierin vertelt hij zijn unieke ervaringen om het bewustzijn rondom hiv en aids te vergroten. Tijdens de bijeenkomst gebruikt Peter een krachtige metafoor: de vergelijking tussen de Titanic en de aids crisis. Hij legt uit dat de passagiers op de Titanic dachten dat ze onkwetsbaar waren op het onzinkbare schip, totdat het te laat was. Dit spiegelt de onbezonnenheid uit de jaren 80, toen mensen dachten dat de ziekte hen niet kon raken. De presentatie wordt ondersteund door multi media, zoals video's en grafische presentaties. Hiermee maakt Peter de gevaren van het virus tastbaar en bespreekbaar. Hij legt de nadruk op preventie en medische feiten om het stigma en de taboes te doorbreken. Peter heeft de lezing jarenlang gegeven aan scholieren en studenten op met name op middelbare scholen en universiteiten. Hij wil daarmee jongeren waarschuwen dat hiv/aids nog steeds een actueel gevaar is. Het project heeft in Tsjechië de steun van twee ministeries, Onderwijs & Gezondheid. Nu vertelt hij op Freddies Dinner dit verhaal.

Datum en locatie

Freddies Dinner vindt plaats op dinsdag 24 november. Dit jaar komen we samen op een nieuwe locatie:

Er is voldoende parkeergelegenheid bij het ROC en op straat parkeren kan ook, na 14.00 uur is het gratis.

Ticketverkoop

Voor zowel de lezing als het benefietdiner zijn apart kaarten te koop. De lezing start om 15.00 uur en duurt circa 45 minuten, waarna er vragen kunnen worden gesteld. Vanaf 16:30 uur ben je welkom voor een Freddies Diner-aperitief. Het diner start om 17.15 uur. Vanzelfsprekend houden we om 19:48 uur een minuut stilte om onze held, die op 24 november 1991 overleed, te herdenken en ook stil te staan bij alle andere dierbare vrienden en kennissen die we in de afgelopen jaren hebben verloren. Na het diner zal Bernd van den Bos een uur lang optreden. De avond eindigt rond 21.00 uur.

Houd er rekening mee dat er een beperkt aantal tickets beschikbaar is, dus bestel op tijd!

Not only would our musical hero have celebrated his 80th birthday on September 5, but November 24 also marks exactly 35 years since we sadly lost him to AIDS-related complications. At Freddie’s Dinner, we always take a moment to remember his passing, but above all, we celebrate his life. To make this special year even more memorable, we are welcoming not only a fantastic musical guest, but also an additional afternoon programme featuring a special lecture about the impact of HIV/AIDS around the world.

Musical Guest

Bernd van den Bos, who is currently performing to sold-out theatres across the Netherlands with his wonderful and virtuosic piano interpretations of Queen songs, combined with his personal Queen stories, will be performing at Freddie’s Dinner. You can enjoy a 15-minute performance before dinner, but afterwards he will take the stage for a full hour!

Lecture by Peter Freestone

For the first time in the Netherlands, Peter Freestone will present the interactive TFA Project (Titanic – Freddie – AIDS), originally initiated in 2019 by Milan Devine. In this presentation, Peter shares his unique personal experiences in order to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS. During the presentation, Peter uses a powerful metaphor: the comparison between the Titanic and the AIDS crisis. He explains how the passengers on the Titanic believed they were invulnerable aboard the “unsinkable” ship, until it was too late. This mirrors the recklessness of the 1980s, when people believed that HIV/AIDS could not affect them. The presentation is supported by multimedia, including videos and visual presentations, making the dangers of the virus tangible and open to discussion. Peter focuses on prevention and medical facts in order to break down stigma and taboos.
For many years, Peter has presented this talk to school pupils and students, particularly at secondary schools and universities. His aim is to warn young people that HIV/AIDS remains a very real and relevant threat. In the Czech Republic, the project has received the support of two government ministries: the Ministries of Education and Health. This year, Peter will bring this important story to Freddie’s Dinner.

Ticket Sales

Separate tickets are available for the talk and the charity dinner.
The lecture starts at 3:00 pm and lasts approximately 45 minutes, followed by an opportunity for questions. From 4:30 pm, you are welcome to join us for a Freddie’s Dinner aperitif. Dinner starts at 5:15 pm. As always, at 7:48 pm we will observe a minute of silence in memory of our hero, who passed away on November 24, 1991. We will also take a moment to remember all the dear friends and loved ones we have lost over the years. After dinner, Bernd van den Bos will perform live for one hour. The evening will finish at approximately 9:00 pm. Please note that only a limited number of tickets are available, so make sure to order yours in time!

Vandaag bereikte ons het droeve nieuws dat Barry Mitchell afgelopen maandag, 17 augustus, is overleden. Barry was de 2e bassist van Queen.

Barry was een graag geziene gast op diverse Queen evenementen. In 2017 was hij, toen in Rotterdam, een bezoeker aan Freddie's Dinner. Dat was net midden in de periode dat Peter Freestone werkte als adviseur voor de film 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Toen Barry Peter zag, was één van zijn eerste vragen "Will someone portray me in the movie?"
In die film is hij overgeslagen. Maar is zeker niet overgeslagen in ons hart. We herinneren hem als iemand met een geweldig gevoel voor humor.

Today we received the sad news that Barry Mitchell passed away last Monday, 17 August. Barry was Queen's second bassist.

Barry was a familiar and much-loved guest at various Queen events. In 2017, he attended Freddie's Dinner, in Rotterdam. This was right in the middle of the period when Peter Freestone was working as an adviser on the film Bohemian Rhapsody. When Barry saw Peter, one of the first things he asked was, "Will someone portray me in the film?"

In the end, he was not featured in the film. But he features in our hearts. We will remember him as a wonderful man with a terrific sense of humour.

We kregen een vraag van Anna Noordeloos. Anna is bezig met een artikel voor een (online) vrouwenblad voor de 80e verjaardag van Freddie. Ze zoekt vrouwen, die Freddie nog live met Queen hebben zien optreden. Ze is op zoek naar de herinneringen...

Dus, ben je een vrouw, heb je een verhaal over met wie je ging, waar je ging… Kun je vertellen wat je leeftijd was en wat je bijstaat van het optreden en met name van Freddie, misschien voel je je dan geroepen om contact met Anna op te nemen, zodat ze een geweldig artikel kan schrijven.

Lieve Queen fans,

Het heeft even op zich laten wachten, maar we zijn blij te kunnen melden dat we namens de Queen Fanclub en stichting Fans Will Be Friends, maar bovenal dankzij jullie allemaal een bedrag van €4.000 zullen overmaken aan het Aids Fonds, als opbrengst van Freddie’s Dinner 2025 en de Queendag 2026. Wie afgelopen keer bij Freddie's Dinner of op de Queendag is geweest, herinnert zich waarschijnlijk wel het geweldige optreden van Prestige Pro.

Ze bestaan 10 jaar. En daarom is er morgen, in Wassenaar, een jubileumconcert. Mocht je morgenavond tijd over hebben, dan is dit wellicht een mooie kans.

Freddie Mercury’s black silk velvet jacket. Our most valuable piece… for now.
What makes it so special?

It helped shape history. Want to know how?

Freddie wore this jacket in the Bohemian Rhapsody promotional video in 1975. 🎤
The video, directed by Bruce Gowers and filmed at Elstree Studios, became one of the first truly groundbreaking music videos. And this jacket was right there.

But Freddie didn’t wear it just once.

💛 It became part of Freddie’s visual identity in the mid-70s. A time when everything was changing.

Years later, the jacket appeared at Sotheby’s as part of the iconic auction
“Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own.”

We managed to acquire it. It wasn’t easy… but that’s a story for another time.
Today, it stands as one of the most valuable and most expensive pieces in the World of Freddie collection, and it will be on display during Freddie - The Exhibition.

Ha allen,

Wij zijn op zoek naar diegene die op de Queendag van 7 maart de kaartjes voor 9 april van Prestige Pro met Charly Luske in de loterij gewonnen heeft. Het concert is wegens ziekte verplaatst naar de 22ste april.
