In essence, WMC is a wind music festival based on contests for wind and fanfare bands, percussion ensembles, brass bands, marching and show bands, and conductors. During the fourweek festival, WMC’s program will also feature high quality orchestras and artists from the Netherlands and other countries at various locations in the city and region, showcasing a cross section of what wind music has to offer. Over the past seventy years, WMC has developed into a leading player in the international music world: WMC confers status and prestige onto its participating musicians and orchestras. Winners at Kerkrade can officially call themselves a world champion in the four years until the next contest. WMC has for many years played an important role in the development of jury systems and competition formats. Altogether, the organization plays a pivotal role in the world of wind music and is preeminently the most prestigious festival for wind and fanfare bands, percussion ensembles, brass bands, and marching and show bands. During WMC 2022 the organization expects to welcome more than 20.000 musicians and 300.000 visitors to the city of Kerkrade.

Growing beyond borders…

By 1958, the World Music Contest had firmly established itself as a unique international event.

What started just a few years earlier in Kerkrade was already attracting more bands, more countries and more attention from across the world.

With every edition, the level rose, the audience grew and the sense of connection through music became stronger.

🎺 The 20th World Music Contest is coming to Kerkrade!

On Thursday, July 9, we kick off an unforgettable evening of wind music in the heart of Kerkrade. From 6:00 PM, the opening parade winds through the city centre, featuring crowd favorites like Showband Takostu Stiens, Bicycle Showband Crescendo, and the legendary Blue Devils International, alongside ensembles from Spain, Thailand, and beyond.

All evening, the BLOW! Stage on the Market Square will be buzzing with live performances by SLIM Vitzkids, Heavy Hoempa, Marshall Cooper, and Druckluft.

And at 10:15 PM? The official opening ceremony, with a spectacular light show and a closing performance by the Blue Devils International you won't want to miss.

☕🎺 Herinneringen ophalen, verhalen delen en samen genieten van de mooiste WMC momenten!

Op vrijdag 15 mei vindt het tweede WMC Café plaats in het Sjtaater Hoes in Kerkrade-West. Vanaf 19.00 uur duiken we samen in de rijke geschiedenis van het WMC met bijzondere verhalen, beeldmateriaal en mooie anekdotes.

Onder andere Jo Bonnema, de oudste actieve vrijwilliger van het WMC én nog altijd actief muzikant, neemt ons mee achter de schermen van de concertwedstrijden 👀🎶

Het eerste WMC Café was gevuld met gezelligheid, humor en prachtige herinneringen en dat belooft deze editie opnieuw te worden! Iedereen is welkom om mee te praten, herinneringen te delen of gewoon gezellig aan te schuiven.
