OPERATION VARSITY

Today in 1945, on March 27, Operation Plunder came to an end. While running the paths during the Liberation Trail on Tour at Groesbeek, we came across the name Operation Varsity. This was an Allied airborne operation that was part of the larger Operation Plunder, which took place from March 23 to 27, 1945. More than 16,000 paratroopers and thousands of aircraft took part in Operation Varsity under the command of Field Marshal Montgomery.

The objective was to cross the northern part of the Rhine River and from there advance into northern Germany. Looking at the map, you can see a kind of bulge in the front line near Nijmegen—that is the area where we will also be running during the Liberation Trail this coming June.

After crossing the Rhine the allied forces were unstoppable on their way to Berlin.

On Sunday, April 19, we’re hosting the final Liberation Trail on Tour before we head to Normandy in June for the 2026 edition. This run takes place in Scheveningen —one of the trickiest Dutch place names to pronounce correctly, as you might remember from the film Soldaat van Oranje.

Our physiotherapist, Remko Vleerlaag, has mapped out a stunning route across the beach and through the dunes between The Hague and Wassenaar.

You can choose between a 21 km or 27 km route. Both will take you through the history of World War II along the paths of Meijendel and Waalsdorpervlakte, where we’ll pause for telling something about what happenend here during WWII.

Curious? Sign up now, and if you have any questions, we’d love to hear from you!!

This is not a race.
This is a social run.
Participation is FREE, but we’d love to know you’re joining us.

We can’t wait to see you there.

GLIDERS & GRAVEL PATHS 🪨☀️ | What a day. A group of enthusiastic trailrunners took on the Liberation Trail in Groesbeek, locals who were surprised by the route, and runners from outside the area who were blown away by the landscape. 23 km, over 300 meters of elevation, blue skies, sunshine and perfect running temperatures. Couldn’t ask for more.

Right after the start we paused for the first historical moment at the WACO glider monument on the edge of the Groesbeek woods. On September 17, 1944, more than 400 gliders landed here as part of Operation Market Garden. Soldiers of the US 82nd Airborne Division arrived to secure bridges and high ground, paving the way for the liberation of the Netherlands.

From there, everyone found their own rhythm, heading towards the Wolfsberg, the Canadian War Cemetery and the Flierenberg. Along the way: the Kalkman Good Energy aid station with energy bites and shots, much needed and very welcome ⚡️

Via the stunning Mookerheide, the loop closed and the 23 km was in the legs. A beautifully mixed group: young and old, men and women, trailrunners, storytellers, people taking time for history and a photo along the way.

This is exactly how we love to see it.
Run in freedom, physically and in mind. 🕊️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Dear Keeper of History,

Sunday, March 1, we’re taking you to the forests and hills around Groesbeek and Mook. During this 23 km trail run, we’ll move through a historic landscape where the events of September 1944 are still clearly visible. This run is partly a Recon Run, exploring the final section of the long stage of the Liberation Trail.
This area is closely connected to the story of the 82nd Airborne Division during Operation Market Garden. Along the way, we’ll briefly pause to reflect on the history of this unique region.

The route
You’ll run using GPS or simply follow the runner in front of you 😜 There will be no route markings. This is a social run, so we stay together as much as possible.

Aid and supplies
There will be no aid stations along the route. Please bring enough food, water, or sports drink from home. During the run, you’ll have the opportunity to try energy bites and energy shots from our partner Kalkman Good Energy. After the run, a drink and a small snack will be waiting for you, so we can hang out and talk about the recon and the Liberation Trail.

The weather
Early forecasts suggest cool early-spring conditions. Dress accordingly and be prepared for changing weather.

See you Sunday!
