๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ Learning by watching can boost performance.
Did you know that children can improve their swimming performance simply by watching instructional videos? ๐Ÿคฏ

In this project from Carola Minkels, she compared different types of videos (watching themselves, watching an edited version highlighting their best moments, or watching another swimmer slightly more skilled) and found something surprising: every type of video helped equally. What matters isnโ€™t who appears in the video, but paying attention to the movement.

๐Ÿ“Œ What we discovered:
โœ… Children who watched instructional videos improved more than those who didnโ€™t.
โœ… The biggest improvement was in swimming time, not technique.
โœ… Motivation didnโ€™t change from watching videos โ€” the improvement is cognitive, not motivational.

In short:
โžก๏ธ Observe + understand = learn faster.

Technology not only makes lessons more engaging โ€” it also enhances learning in a smart and effective way. ๐Ÿ’ก

"Does the alignment of the force vector and the centre of mass affect tumble turn performance?"

This week, Paul Koster is attending the conference of the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports in Salzburg.
He will be presenting a part of his PhD project to fellow international researchers. Additionally, it's a great opportunity to network and exchange ideas with experts in biomechanics.

Recently, our PhD candidate Carola Minkels completed her measurements for a new study during swimming lessons at the Dutch Dolphin Swimming Club. This research focused on the effectiveness of observational learning in teaching the front crawl, and its impact on motivation and self-confidence in children aged 5 to 12 years. Over 60 children participated, receiving weekly swimming lessons for eight weeks.

This research is part of the PhD project "Motor Learning in Swimming Lessons." This PhD project is a collaboration between InnoSportLab De Tongelreep, the Nationale Raad Zwemveiligheid (NRZ), and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. At InnoSportLab de Tongelreep we are working on the swimming lessons of the future with the support of the Gemeente Eindhoven and BrabantSport.

๐Ÿ“ฃ InnoSportlab de Tongelreep at the Dutch Swimming Championships!๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ†

This past weekend, we were active at the Dutch Swimming Championships (NK) in Amersfoort, held at the beautiful Amerena
This four-day event took place from Thursday to Sunday. During these days, we captured footage of the top Dutch swimmers, including our Olympic heroes of KNZB ๐ŸŽฅ

These videos and analyses are crucial for their final preparations towards the Olympic Games in Paris. Additionally, we recorded footage of talented swimmers preparing for events such as the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) and the European Junior Championships (EJC). ๐ŸŒŸ

At InnoSportlab de Tongelreep, we are proud to contribute to the development and success of both established athletes and emerging talents. It was an inspiring weekend, and we look forward to see how the videos and analyses done enhance our swimmersโ€™ performances.

"Determining Vฬ‡O2max in competitive swimmers: Comparing the validity and reliability of cycling, arm cranking, ergometer swimming, and tethered swimmingโ€
We're proud to announce the recent publication of this article by Michel de Haan, investigating the most effective method for determining Vฬ‡O2max in competitive swimmers.
Maximal oxygen consumption (Vฬ‡O2max) is a critical success factor in most endurance sports, including competitive swimming. Vฬ‡O2max reflects how well the cardiovascular and respiratory systems deliver oxygen to the muscles involved, as well as their ability to utilize this oxygen in producing the energy required for competitive performance. Measuring Vฬ‡O2max is therefore an indispensable tool for researchers, coaches and athletes striving toward excellence in training and performance.
This study is part of the physiology PhD project of Michel de Haan. This project is a co-operation between KNZB, PSV, TopSupport, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and InnoSportLab De Tongelreep. The study was supported by a ZonMW Sportinnovator grant.
