FILLERS TAKE THE TITLES IN LUXEMBOURG

IT WAS DOUBLE delight for the Fillers as both Joshua and Pia claimed the PREDATOR Luxembourg Open titles at the GridX complex on Sunday evening. It was Joshua’s 11th Euro Tour crown, while Pia made it championship number four and the second time that they have triumphed simultaneously, following on from Lasko, Slovenia in 2022.

Joshua defeated Wojciech Szewczyk 9-5 for the title, a match that was finely poised at 5-4 in Filler’s favour before he got the better of the closing stages. In the women’s final, Pia showed huge resilience to come from 4-1 down to triumph 7-5 against Spain’s Mayte Ropero who was chasing her maiden Euro Tour title.

Joshua certainly earned his trophy as he battled through a stellar field after a shaky start in his opening match against Poland’s Adam Stankiewicz. Improving game-by-game, he took down a string of tough opponents including Daniel Maciol, Mateusz Sniegocki, Miesko Fortunski and then Wiktor Zielinski in the semi-final.

He said, ā€œI feel amazing because I was kind of struggling but from match to match, I was just raising my game and I felt more comfortable on the table. Overcoming all the Polish players, I played like six Polish players, all the top ones and it feels amazing as I had to play the toughest players and I beat them.

ā€œI’m a positive person even when I have those times and you never want to be in that position where you play so bad but I was there and somehow, I won the match even though I missed so many balls. I keep telling myself ā€˜play the match’ and don’t think about anything and I went step-by-step but if you’re a champion you have to be in the right mindset and not be bothered by any mistakes you do.

ā€œWhen you’re in the final, you’re always going to be playing someone who fought his way through and played good as well – otherwise he wouldn’t be in the Euro Tour final. For me it doesn’t matter who I play – I always go with the same mindset and if I play my game, I know it’s always going to be a tough one for my opponent.

ā€œWhen I won my tenth one I spoke about Ralf Souquet’s record but there’s still I think 12 titles missing. With all respect, you see how tough it is to win a Euro Tour and Ralf winning so many – it’s incredible. I don’t know if I’ll ever get there but I’ll just have fun with the next ones and try to win as many as possible!ā€ he added.

In the Predator Luxembourg Women’s Open Germany’s Pia Filler showed why she is the most improved player in the women’s game as she overcame another losing position to win against the odds. Having lost her opening game of the championship to Lena Primus, she fought through the one-loss side beating a slew of class players and faced Ina Kaplan in the semi-final. Again, trailing 4-2, she picked it up and won 7-6 to make the final.

Commented Pia, ā€œI mean today the semi-finals and final I probably played my worst to be honest but I never give up and I believed in myself and I’m very proud to have another Euro Tour title. The game is not over until the last ball goes down and I know I’d already won a Euro Tour before, she’d not so mentally I thought I was in a better position.

ā€œBut you’ve got to keep fighting and capitalise on any chances you possibly get and I did. I try to get as good as I possibly can and try and get a little bit better, and every single day I’m working hard with Josh, luckily. You never know how far you can go and I want to improve every single day.ā€

The Predator Euro Tour returns from 25-28 June at its regular summer stop in St Johann im Pongau in the Austrian Alps. The Euro Tour is preceded by a full programme of Predator Pro Billiard Series resorts in the same venue.

2026 Predator Luxembourg Open

DOWN TO THE QUARTER FINALS IN LUXEMBOURG

AS THE PREDATOR Luxembourg Open continued through its penultimate day, the respective fields in both men’s and women’s are down to the final eight players. Taking place at the GridX complex in Wickrange in the south-west corner of the country, the men’s and women’s tournaments play out to a conclusion on Sunday evening.

In the men’s competition, Joshua Filler is on track to keep his unparalleled Euro Tour success rate going as he defeated countryman Fabrizio Ingrasci by 9-2. Ingrasci at just 16 years-old had a tournament to remember, particularly his hill-hill defeat of Ante Sola (Croatia) to see him into the last 16. Another German youngster going even better is Valentin Schmitz who defeated Paul Vilches-Pardo by 9-6 to make the last eight.

Aleksa Pecelj of Serbia can go back as far as 2021 for when he reached his only Euro Tour final, but he’s well placed after beating Austria’s Daniel Guttenberger 9-6 to secure his quarter-final berth. Pecelj lost his opening match of the tournament so had to do it the hard way, starting at 9.00 this morning and winning five hard games to secure his progress.

He said, ā€œI lost in the first round so I had to go back to the losers’ side and grind it out but I played five matches today so I’m really happy that I managed to cross the line. I had all tough matches to be honest, in the losers round, every match was a nail-biter so I’m really happy. Daniel is a close friend of mine so it’s always tough to play against him so I’m happy that I won. I’m trying to play match by match but I know that I can win it. I reached a final before and I lost to Fran (Sanchez Ruiz) but I think it’s time to win, not just reach the final.ā€

He will face Wiktor Zielinski, who enjoyed a 9-5 win over Max Lechner (Austria) to keep his momentum going at his second Predator Euro Tour event in over two years. Zielinski is a three-time Euro Tour champion, including winning as a 16-year-old back in 2017.

Commented Zielinski, ā€œI’m pretty happy. Max is a world-class player so it’s never an easy battle with him so I’m happy that I made the last ball of this match. It’s just one step of many to claim the title tomorrow. My game is OK; it could be better with some improvements on break but I’m getting there and with each match I’m getting stronger and stronger so hopefully I will keep it up for tomorrow. It’s one ball at a time, one match, step-by-step and I’m not thinking about the title just the quarter-final at 10am tomorrow. That’s what I’m focused on right now.ā€

In the Predator Luxembourg Women’s Open Germany’s Pia Filler emulated her partner Joshua in making the last eight and she goes up against the dangerous Ana Gradisnik in her quest for a fourth Euro Tour title. Filler white-washed Oliwia Zalewska (Poland) 7-0 to progress through.

She said, ā€œI played quite well I’d say. It felt smooth and easy even though I ran out of a few positions but I just kept making balls. I saw going on the one-loss side a little bit positive because I got to play more matches so today, I played three matches and was quite excited about it. If you go through on the winners side you might have just one match a day, and I like to play more and I enjoyed it.
I’m happy I’m through and Josh is through and tomorrow is a new day and I want to give it all and of course we’re here to win.ā€

Finally, Ina Kaplan, such a dominant force on the Women’s Euro Tour over the past few years, is back in the hunt for another title as she won through over the Netherland’s Jolien Schuurman.

Commented Ina, ā€œIt was great match. I was a bit surprised because 9.00 in the evening is not my best time to play pool but I really played solid and made two runouts and made one mistake but other than that I played really good. I’m feeling pretty good and would play every tournament that I could but at this stage I have two kids and a job so I just have to prioritise. I will play my best tomorrow and I’m always here to win.ā€

The final day’s play starts at the quarter-final stage on Sunday morning at 10.00 in the both events. The semi-finals follow at 13.00 and 17.00, with title deciders scheduled for 20.00.

2026 Predator Luxembourg Open

DAY TWO FOR MEN ENDS AS WOMEN ARE UP & RUNNING

THE WOMEN’S EVENT commenced today at the Predator Luxembourg Open as 54 players took to the tables in the second stop of the year on the Predator Euro Tour series. Taking place at the GridX complex in Wickrange in the south-west corner of the country, the men’s and women’s tournaments play out to a conclusion on Sunday evening .

The Predator Luxembourg Women’s Open features a super-strong field with just #1 ranked player Jasmin Ouschan absent from the proceedings. One player looking to make a significant move up the rankings is Sweden’s Linnea Hjalmarstrom, who went on something of a tear-up, winning her three matches today to qualify for the last 16, conceding just two racks in the process.

The Swede skipped the last Euro Tour in Antalya but instead won a straight pool gold medal at the concurrent Predator European Championships.

She said, ā€œI feel I’m playing well. I prepared well and I’m getting the results I want so I feel good. It’s a great game to measure skill, straight pool, so to win that one is extra special for me but I know that results in the past don’t matter, it’s only what you do now.

ā€œI want to play well and feel good on the table, that’s my only goal but usually if I feel good and play well, I will get a good result so it goes hand-in-hand. I play every day, sometimes twice a day but I try to do seven days a week and work on my weaknesses, work on my technique, fine tuning a couple of details and now for this tournament, preparing with the break which is a great factor in succeeding or not,ā€ she added.

Monika Zabek (Poland) also played well in Turkey where she had a career-best Euro Tour finish, reaching the semi-finals, and is looking to build on that performance here in Luxembourg. With three wins from three, she certainly did that, defeating Lynn Pijpers, Yvonne Ullmann-Hybler and Christine Steinlage in succession.

She said ā€I played good, I would say. I struggled with the first two matches in the beginning and then I pulled it off so I’m happy with the result. Antalya definitely giving me big confidence; it changed something in my approach to the match and this time, I’m aiming for the same or even more, maybe the final!ā€

The men’s Winner’s Qualification round has been set at the Predator Luxembourg Open and those 32 return on Saturday morning at 11.00 to scrap it out for a spot in the single-elimination showdown.

Claiming his maiden Euro Tour title last time out at the Predator Turkish Open in Antalya was Wojciech Szewczyk. The classy Pole currently holds the No.1 spot on three major rankings – the WPA World Rankings, the Predator Euro Tour Rankings and the Polish National Rankings.

He said ā€œI’m actually surprised by how much satisfaction it gives me. I’m very proud of it. I didn’t know that it would mean so much to me before it happened. It sounds surreal to be first in all of the rankings since it’s separate tournaments. You’ve got to follow them all and it shows that I was pretty consistent especially the World No.1 but also the coincidence that I’m the No.1 everywhere makes me feel quite accomplished. I’ve already won national, European and World titles. Of course, there’s so much more to win but it feel like it adds to my resume very nicely and I’m very proud of it.ā€

Szewczyk has won two from two here at GridX, defeating Alex Montpelier (France) 7-3 yesterday and then coming through against Mika Van Berkel by a similar scoreline on Friday. He will face Mustafa Alnar for a place in the straight knock-out last 32.

Another player through to Saturday with two wins is perennial Euro Tour Champion Joshua Filler. After one of his self-described ā€˜worst performances’ yesterday, narrowly beating Adam Stankiewicz, the German ace picked up the pace today as he defeated Daniel Maciol 7-5.

Commented Filler, ā€œI did play better. I had a good lead in the beginning of 5-0 and it give me a little bit of confidence. But still I made a few errors and he just punished me as hard as he could so I felt a bit of pressure towards the end because I knew that if I didn’t get two of my breaks as a ā€˜W’, he’s going to break at hill-hill. So the break system makes it more tricky even if you’re up.

ā€œOther than that, I was just happy to beat Daniel because he’s one of the toughest players in the field and playing him in the second match is always hard. I feel like when you play someone and you know you have to play your best, it just pushes you harder so that’s what I felt today and my game was better. Not my best but good enough. I’m still in and still have two lives left and I’ll just try to force my A game out,ā€ he added.

Play resumes tomorrow at 9.00 in the men’s event with Losers Round 4, followed by Winner’s Qualification.

2026 Predator Luxembourg Open

OPENING DAY CONCLUDES IN LUXEMBOURG

THE OPENING DAY of the Predator Luxembourg Open on the Euro Tour played out today at the GridX, south-west of the capital city. GridX, which bills itself as Europe’s first multi-experience destination, is something new and different as a Predator Euro Tour venue. A huge establishment, which opened last year, it offers dining, retail, art, events as well as an eye-popping collection of classic cars.

With a very strong field this week, among the early winners on the opening day was Johua Filler (Germany), who somehow managed to squeak past Poland’s unheralded Adam Stankiewicz 7-6. The Pole looked set for a huge upset with just four balls left but nerves got the better of him and a jump shot to stay on track failed to pocket, leaving Filler with three balls for the win.

By his own admission, it wasn’t vintage Filler; ā€œI was lucky enough that he made in crucial moments some mistakes because on my side it was a really poor standard. I missed all the middle/tough shots – not even close – so I kind of didn’t have a feel of where to aim. I haven’t played since a year on the Euro Tour and that was one of the worst performances from my side. I have to improve now because I know I’m going to play Daniel Maciol tomorrow so I just have to play much, much better now.

ā€œEvery opportunity I had, I just tried to go for it but it just didn’t help me, because I kept missing the balls. I know I’m capable of making all those balls but today was the day when I didn’t but this is pool; sometimes so you have a bad day and I had it today but still won, and I can only improve now.

ā€œOf course, I always try to be positive even though maybe it didn’t look like it because I was also kind of overwhelmed with how I played but I just have to forget this match. He played good in the beginning but also fell. He was quite nervous too but still made a couple of great shots to be fair and I’m just glad that I won and can continue in a different way hopefully,ā€ he concluded.

Another German player over the first-round hurdle is Tobias Bongers as he looks to claim his maiden Predator Euro Tour title after coming so close in the Netherlands last year. Coming in off the back of a solid showing at the European Championships in Turkey in March when he claimed a pair of bronze medals, Bongers coasted past compatriot Michael Rohrig by 7-0.

He said, ā€œI played really well – I only missed one ball and I think I played a perfect set so a really good start to this Euro Tour for me. I think my game is really good this year, I practiced a lot and I’m here to win the title. I’m hoping my first Euro Tour win will come very shortly. I didn’t like 10-ball because my break wasn’t so good; I like to play straight pool and 9-ball but it’s now 10-ball time and maybe it’s my tournament,ā€ he added.

Max Lechner defeated Oliver Szolnoki in an exciting match that might have made a final. It went all the way and the likeable Austrian was pleased to have emerged victorious.

He said, ā€œI mean Oliver is a great player, he won the World Games recently but for sure he’s not the opponent you want to meet in Winners Round One match but what else can I do but try my hardest and play my best. I was up 5-1 and had a pretty good start and then I missed a stupid shot – I tried to cheat the pocket a little too much, it was an open table to go up 6-1, and then he started to play really, really well and my break didn’t work and his break started to work.

ā€œThat’s how it got to 6-6 but in the end, I got luckier than he got and I kept my nerves and ran out in the end. I’ve never played really bad when I’ve lost in the Euro Tour at last 32 or last 16 rounds and my game is pretty good right now and I’m looking forward to the next rounds and to go all the way finally,ā€ he added.

Finally, another tough early rounds match saw Wiktor Zielinski defeat Emil-Andre Gangflot by 7-4. The exiled Pole hasn’t been seen much on the Euro Tour of late but his three championship victories in 2017, 2021 and ’22 are testimony to his pedigree and he has enjoyed a recent run of good form in the USA.

Commented Zielinski, ā€œIt was a tough one. It wasn’t pretty from both of us. We couldn’t find our game and we both lost the cueball a few times especially when we used the short rail as it was quite bouncy but in the end, I’m happy that I got the win.

ā€œThe USA was quite successful for me and I hope I can keep it up but I have to beat a lot of champions as well so it’s not going to be easy. You never know and I will do my best. Whenever I go to any tournament I always feel I’ve got a chance to win it but as I said, it’s not going to be easy.ā€

Play resumes tomorrow at 10.00 in the men’s event, the same time as the Predator Luxembourg Women’s Open gets underway.

2026 Predator Luxembourg Open

KILLER FILLERS RETURN FOR LUXEMBOURG SHOWDOWN

MAKING A WELCOME return to the Predator Euro Tour are the dynamic German husband and wife duo of Joshua and Pia Filler to compete in the Predator Luxembourg Open events which get underway on Thursday morning at 10.00 local time. 10-ball is the game this week with the men initially playing races to seven while the women race to five. It’s alternate break, with players breaking two consecutive racks per turn. There are 164 runners in the men’s division, while the women’s has 55.

Back in European action is Josh Filler who has had a very successful start to 2026 as the season gears up for a succession of major tournaments. A winner of the Predator Las Vegas Open as well as claiming the Derby City 9-Ball title, Filler makes his first Euro Tour appearance since St Johann in Austria last June. Without doubt his record on Europe’s pre-eminent tour over the past few years is something most players could only dream about. Eight championship victories in four years are testament to his dominance.

He said, ā€œI remember the last 10-ball Euro Tour I played was in Treviso last year and I won. Of course, I’m full of confidence and always looking forward to play in a Euro Tour as it always is good competition. My biggest goal this year is to win the Predator World 10-Ball Championship as I would then have won all possible World Championships. Other than that, I’m always targeting to win a couple of big majors each year.ā€

Having recently moved into a new home, the Fillers now have a prime practice facility on site, making their training regime all the more comfortable.

Joshua added, ā€œWe always made sure to have good practice and preparation opportunities, so it hasn’t changed a lot but having the tables just down the stairs definitely leads to spending even more time at the table as we did anyways.ā€

Whilst her partner has been taking down titles, Pia Filler has hardly been asleep at the wheel. Currently ranked at No.2 by the World Pool Association and No.4 on the Predator Women’s Euro Tour, the young German seems yet to have hit her ceiling as her career progresses at pace.

However, she is far from resting on her laurels: ā€œIt’s definitely good to see that I’m very stable and successful over the past couple years. However, I’m not looking at how proud I am, for me it’s more about constantly working on becoming even better as I’m always hungry for more.ā€

With WPA World Ranking points now available on both men’s and women’s Euro Tours, Pia said, ā€œI think it brings great value to the Women’s Euro Tour and I’m just very happy to witness, and being part of how the Euro Tour has been growing and being professionalized since Predator got involved. It creates good opportunities for all of us.ā€
Finally, she commented on their new, improved practice opportunities; ā€œWe’ve had our own private practice room before and always made sure to have the best possible conditions but it’s definitely next level to just have it all under the same roof and now, pool is the first thing to do in the morning… right after coffee!ā€

Joshua Fller get’s his Luxembourg campaign underway tomorrow afternoon at 16.00 against Poland’s Adam Stankiewicz, while Pia will be in action when the women’s event starts on Friday.
