TESTING THE VIEW

Our social housing building for elderly in Oostenburg is located on the corner of two important streets. The apartments at the corner take full advantage of this urban gift and will have a great view in many directions.

Grid of shadows.

Stone factory made this beautiful brick for our project in Oostenburg, a modular brick with a size of 190x90mm with a false joint of 10mm.

We are going to apply the stone with a deepened (raked) joint, creating a grid of shadows.

The following applies to all doors, window frames: snap to the grid!

Size does matter.

Facade elements for Kavel 6 on Oostenburgereiland in Amsterdam, manufactured by the Bestcon factory.

The openings are simple, square, and above all impressively large.
In this social housing project we want to create luxury at the most rudimentary level by giving every apartment an abundance of light, air and space.

With publications recently in Japan, China and Australia, our project and building system Open Ateliers continues to draw attention.

When developing the building system, we continuously asked ourselves the question whether it could become more simple: less details, less materials, less connections.
And when we had found the optimum simplicity, we kept asking ourselves the question whether the system had even more possibilities: more functions, more typologies, more types of users.

Universal questions, apparently…

A continuous work in progress.
For the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of the University of Amsterdam we will design a new period room that will become part of the collection of period rooms that we have already realized in this intriguing building dating from 1664.
This time it concerns the Vingboons room, named after the original architect of the building Philips Vingboons (1607-1678).

It's great that the outlines of our plan for Kavel 6 on Oostenburg are finally becoming visible.

Kavel 6 is an urban ensemble consisting of 170 studios for young people (designed by and .nl) and 30 apartments for elderly (designed by ) for social housing corporation , build by .

The design for the ensemble responds to the highly urban context by reinforcing the characteristic diversity in size, scale and appearance of the various buildings. The collective courtyard garden in the heart of the ensemble will be the connecting element as a quiet meeting place for the residents.

A core memory: exhibition Vice Versa.

Together with gallery owner Paul van Rosmalen of , specialized in NUL/Zero, Minimalist and Conceptual art, we had put together an exhibition in which works of art by artists from the gallery (in this photo the incredible works of Armando and ) were related to works and HOH (drawings, models, mock-ups, and even a doormat from a project).

Vice Versa stood for the continuous interaction between art and architecture as a source of inspiration. Or as the then editor-in-chief of put it so beautifully: "The exhibition could just as well have been called 'Architecture before architecture starts'."

Our Story

Hartemink Ouburg Hilgendorf Architecten (HOH) is an architectural design firm based in Amsterdam. HOH designs and produces on all scales of the built environment ranging from curtains and furniture to public buildings and master plans in the Netherlands and abroad. The projects are expressive, layered, sensitive, bold, contextual, autonomous, poetic and pragmatic, fuelled by an inherent engagement to the complexity of social, cultural and urban life.

HOH is actively involved in academic teaching, research and publication. The academic world is seen as parallel reality to the practice, a testing ground for new ideas, techniques, insights and talent. Practice and theory, reality and dream, are seen as indivisible parts of each other.

HOH was founded in 2017 combing the projects, ambitions, experience and expertise of the founding partners’ offices and is currently working on a site-specific work for the Amsterdam Light Festival, a high-way underpass in Amsterdam, two residential buildings and an urban plan for Jyväkylä (Finland) as a result of their winning Europan proposal, the headquarters for one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fragrance and flavourings, new housing for University of Amsterdam’s Institute for Advanced Study and an urban plan of 125.000m2 in Amsterdam.
