🎞️ Durban International Film Festival Recap! ➡️
Festival season doesn’t stop when Movies that Matter ends. Throughout the year, our team visits festivals around the world to exchange ideas, strengthen international connections, and discover new films.
Last month, our Head of International & Industry, Julie Nederkoorn, travelled to the Durban International Film Fest (DIFF) in South Africa 🇿🇦
As the oldest and largest film festival in Southern Africa, DIFF has been showcasing global and African cinema since 1979, while also supporting emerging filmmakers through industry programmes, community screenings, and talent development.
During the festival, Julie led a workshop for participants in the Film Festival Residency, a seven day programme that brings together South African festival directors to strengthen their festivals and build lasting collaborations 📝
🏆 She also served on the Documentary Competition jury alongside Azza Elhosseiny and Omelga Mthiyane. Together, they awarded the Best Documentary prize to A Fox Under a Pink Moon by Mehrdad Oskouei and Soraya Akhlaghi.
The film chronicles 16-year-old Afghan artist Soraya who has spent five years trying to escape Iran for Austria. She filmed herself over this period, capturing escape attempts, her abusive marriage, and her art-drawings and sculptures expressing her struggles.
Want to see the winning film for yourself? We happen to be screening it on 21 August at Het Puntje in The Hague 🎬
