Situated in five historic buildings in the centre of Amsterdam, is more a labyrinth than just a simply beautiful building. Each of the spaces have their own unique character, but all reflect the design sensibility that Droog brings. Droog presents Novogen, a compelling photographic project by the Hungarian artist Daniel Szalai, which explores the hidden relationship between humans, animals and the pharmaceutical industry.

Behind the production of certain vaccines is an unexpected workforce: chickens. In Novogen project Szalai enters the tightly controlled world of Novogen White hens, specially bred to produce eggs for the pharmaceutical industry.

The exhibition combines 166 individual portraits with photographs tracing the eggs through the production process, accompanied by extracts from corporate manuals and marketing materials. Set against a blue background, the hens appear somewhere between individuals, factory workers and commercial products.

Using a calm, precise visual language, Szalai examines how technology turns living beings into measurable units of production. At its heart lies a difficult paradox: the controlled lives of these animals contribute to saving human ones.

The guests have gone but the dinner-party chaos is staying on the table. For Tableau Tablecloth, photographer Maurice Scheltens used the photogram technique to capture the outlines of plates, glasses and other leftovers in a monochrome print. Colour and texture disappear, leaving a shadowy still life of familiar shapes.

Scheltens is known for turning everything from fruit and remote controls to haute couture gowns into carefully arranged compositions. Here, it stretches across a 212 × 140 cm cotton tablecloth made for Droog.

Tableau Tablecloth was created for Value for Money project and presented during Milan’s Salone del Mobile in 2008.

Made from polyester and fibreglass, this sculptural lady doesn’t just join the party, she becomes the centre of it.

Originally created for public spaces, including the restaurant at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Body Table was designed to get people talking, interacting and looking twice. Part sculpture, part furniture and impossible to ignore, it brings humour and a little provocation to the table.

In 2007, the Body Table joined Droog’s Smart Deco II exhibition in Milan, which explored decoration through experimental materials, new production techniques and a healthy dose of imagination.

Breakfast now comes with a colourful side order. Noticing how many people begin the day with vitamins and supplements, Jo Nakamura gave them their own little spaces within the porcelain set. Against the clean white surface, the pills are no longer something to hide — they become bright decorative dots around the morning meal.

Published in 2004, Simply Droog is a playful journey through the objects and ideas that put Droog on the international design map. Icons such as Tejo Remy’s Chest of Drawers, Rody Graumans’ 85 Lamps and Marcel Wanders’ Knotted Chair appear alongside experimental concepts, exhibitions and collaborative projects.

Rather than following a strict timeline, the book jumps between themes: giving old materials another life, keeping things brilliantly simple, adding a touch of irony and inviting the user to join in.

Generous photography captures the products and experiments in action, showing that design can be useful, thoughtful and still have a sense of humour.

One person’s crumbs are another bird’s breakfast. With Bird Feeder, Paolo Ulian gives the remains of a meal a useful next stop, just outside the window.

A simple wooden slider sweeps breadcrumbs straight from the table into the feeder, with no extra effort. The design is stripped back to what really matters: one easy movement and a small reward for the birds. By connecting an everyday habit with the world outside, Bird Feeder turns tidying the table into a simple act of care for nature.

Created for The New Original: Lessons from China project, Family Vase plays with the idea of originals and copies.

Studio Droog borrowed distinctive colours of the Chinese ceramics and transformed them into gentle gradients and overlapping layers. Each piece was formed from 3D-printed sand instead of ceramic.

The vase looks functional, but there is a catch: fill it with water and it slowly dissolves. This playful twist raises questions about authenticity, usefulness and how long an object needs to last.

Instead of burying ordinary hardware bits, like nails, screws, brackets, nuts and hinges inside furniture, Studio Droog brought them front and center with fun colors, weird shapes, and smart details.

Some of these 210 tweaks presented at the Salone del Mobile in 2015 are genuinely practical, but honestly, most of them are just there to make assembling stuff feel way less like a chore. Turns out giving a humble screw a bit of personality changes everything.
