“Why would you give up part of your power?”

With that question, Tobias Kokkelmans opens the conversation on leadership within Stichting De Theaterdagen.

The follow-up is concrete:
how, as a director, do you make space, not just symbolically, but structurally?
For the Netherlands Theatre Festival and Amsterdam Fringe, this question goes to the core of governance. Not only who is responsible, but how power, legitimacy, and perspective are distributed.

The dual executive board is therefore not a symbolic gesture, but a structural choice to embed polyphony, dissent, and shared responsibility at the top.

De vervolgvraag die hij stelt is concreet:
hoe maak je als directeur of bestuurder daadwerkelijk plaats — niet alleen symbolisch, maar structureel?

Voor Nederlands Theater Festival en Amsterdam Fringe raakt die vraag aan de kern van bestuur. Niet alleen wie verantwoordelijk is, maar ook hoe macht, legitimiteit en perspectief worden verdeeld.

Het tweehoofdige bestuur is daarmee geen symbolische stap, maar een structurele keuze om meerstemmigheid, tegenspraak en gedeelde verantwoordelijkheid te organiseren aan de top.

The Netherlands Theatre Festival (NTF) and Amsterdam Fringe Festival (AFF) are introducing a dual executive board within Stichting De Theaterdagen! 💥✨

Tobias Kokkelmans and Farnoosh Farnia will jointly serve as managing directors, sharing both artistic and operational responsibility.

For both festivals, this is more than an organisational change. It is a deliberate governance choice: equality should not only be visible in programming and audience reach, but also in how leadership is structured.

Instead of concentrating leadership in a single individual, NTF and AFF are choosing a model in which multiple perspectives are structurally embedded in decision-making, where dissent is given space, and responsibility is shared. 🤲🏽

This step is taken in a moment of stability, to ensure that equality is not dependent on intention, but anchored in structure.

Tobias Kokkelmans en Farnoosh Farnia worden samen directeur-bestuurder, met gedeelde artistieke en zakelijke verantwoordelijkheid.

Voor beide festivals is dit nadrukkelijk meer dan een organisatiewijziging. Het is een bewuste governance-keuze: gelijkwaardigheid moet niet alleen zichtbaar zijn in programma en publieksbereik, maar ook in de manier waarop een organisatie bestuurlijk is ingericht.
