SPACE IS THE PLACE is a jazz/impro concert serie in Café de Ruimte (Amsterdam-Noord). A few moments from the closing performance of Raumte, last Sunday in the beautiful hall of Goethe-Institut. Timothé Lantoine–joined by Salya Berraf, Sara Guidolin and Aniol Torrents–transformed the table into a stage for listening, movement and musical exchange.

Mother Tongue announce new album ANDE BOOLOO NU WAR, out on Friday, 6 November 📣

After exploring the stage of an old cinema on their debut album, GMola Sylla, Oscar Jan Hoogland and Frank Rosaly decided their next playground would be an old bulb shed built into a studio called KATZWIJM right in the middle of the Dutch flower fields near Voorhout.

ANDE BOOLOO NU WAR means 'we must come together'. Sylla sings about empowerment: We must stand up and say what we want. Don't be blind, look around, inform yourself and tell your leaders what the people need.

Don't miss the trio next week at Le Guess Who? (8 November) and then on tour for Interlinie in December (see slide 2)!

We want to hear your thoughts about 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒖𝒏𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒅

Early 2027 SITP will bring out its second zine, where we share impressions of last year's events and give some insight into the (current) developments of the impro / jazz scene in Amsterdam.

At Space is the Place, a lot of what we do is putting on events that focus on improvised music, specifically on the local/international improvised music scene. Improvisation begins without knowing exactly where it will lead. A composition made in the moment can be an invitation to collaborate, a call for help, a desire to change and evolve! It asks us to listen, to respond, to take risks, to leave room for others, and to work with what happens along the way.

For the new edition of the SITP zine, we invite contributions that explore the unfinished as a space of possibility.
What happens when we let go of a plan? How do we respond to the unexpected? What can emerge between people, sounds, words and ideas? What does it mean to leave something open?
We would very much like to hear your ideas about this, resisting categorization.

Please send us your sketch of about 100 words: we make a selection to develop a full article for our webzine. There will be a small fee (€ 150,-) for the full article.

Throughout this tour Lukraak–Marcus Wärnheim and Thomas Jaspers–present Interrupted Inconsistencies: a live mixtape-ish concert-happening featuring 150 micropieces of 16 seconds each, performed in one continuous 45-minute set. The duo delivers an absurd stream of sounds, improvisation, and performance (from rattling and squeaking recorder flutes to silent stillness and “free energy music”), with contributions from friends, fellow artists, family members, and strangers. The project is a love letter to communal creativity and the local music scene, where the ordinary and the poetic are allowed to coexist.

Tomorrow: join us at Goethe-Institut Niederlande in Amsterdam for the closing concert of the artistic residency Raumte

Four characters functioning as an ecosystem encounter and react to each other. Four personalities meet and investigate the relationship between real-time music and composition. Every gesture transforms the conditions for the next one; every silence becomes an invitation for another layer to appear. Musical forms are not predetermined, it emerges through listening, negation, compromise, response and/or argument. Each performer embodies a character, with their own behaviours and relationships, and chooses to interact with predefined material. Rather than fixing musical material, the composition defines relationships: ways of listening, reacting, interrupting, supporting, confronting, or transforming one another. With flexible desires, the ensemble moves between instruments, voice, text, objects, movement, and techniques, allowing each performance to become a unique situation shaped by the moment and the audience.

This Friday, opening Interplanetary Night in BIMHUIS: Ludvig Søndergaard Sekstet

As the winner of the Keep an Eye The Records competition, drummer Ludvig Søndergaard was given the opportunity to create his dream band. With these major talents from Amsterdam, he combines and fuses opposite types of composition: intimate piano songs that immediately captivate the listener, and intricate sonic constructions full of irregular rhythms, twelve tone series and electronic experiments. This reflects the division between the Danish countryside, where Ludvig grew up, and the big cities he lived in: Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam.

Next Friday in Amsterdam, Amirtha Kidambi’s Elder Ones live at BIMHUIS for An Interplanetary Night 🪐

Rooted in a deep commitment to social practice, Amirtha Kidambi’s music channels resistance through sound. With her ensemble Elder Ones, the composer creates expansive, exploratory suites that reject conventional song structures in favor of sonic activism confronting systems of oppression. Drums drive an unrelenting march while saxophones erupt in vocal-like cries of defiance, evoking the energy of a mass demonstration. Beneath it all, the harmonium lays a rich droning foundation for Kidambi’s expressive voice to navigate, as the double bass provides a steady anchor amid the turbulence. Drawing from free jazz, post-rock, and radical electroacoustic improvisation, she transforms syncopation and dissonance into bold avant-garde anthems for collective struggle and social movements.

Next Friday, 9 October, during An Interplanetary Night at Bimhui, we’ll host the audiovisual live set Argument with Reality by drummer Gerri Jäger 🥁

With this performance, he ventures into a new direction. His solo project for drums and electronics is now expanded with live visuals created in collaboration with filmmaker Alek Riquelme. It combines self-made and collected video material, and explores themes such as addiction, (non)politics, parenthood and nature. Here Gerri remains grounded in his own expressive language: mixing genres to create a dynamic and unpredictable experience that shifts between power/fragility, minimalism/chaos and boredom/rapture.
