Challenge Almere-Amsterdam Athlete Passed Away
It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of a 54-year-old Swedish athlete who participated in Challenge Almere-Amsterdam yesterday. The man became unwell during the swim of the Long Distance race; he was immediately brought out of the water by the rescue team, and emergency medical care was provided on the spot. Despite all the dedicated medical efforts, he later passed away in the hospital.
In consultation with emergency services, the decision was made not to halt Challenge Almere-Amsterdam following the incident. At the urgent request of the family, no public announcements were made initially, as they needed time to inform immediate loved ones first. This is why nothing had been posted on our channels until now and why there were no changes to our social media updates.
We are, of course, in close contact with the family. It goes without saying that this incident leaves a profound impact - on us as an organization, but above all on the bereaved.
We extend our heartfelt condolences and strength to the family, friends, and loved ones during this unimaginable loss, and we will offer support wherever necessary and possible.

Deelnemer Challenge-Almere Amsterdam overleden
Met zeer grote verslagenheid melden we dat er een 54-jarige Zweedse atleet is overleden die gisteren deelnam aan de Challenge Almere-Amsterdam. De man raakte onwel tijdens het zwemonderdeel van de Long Distance, werd direct door de reddingsbrigades uit het water gehaald en er is direct ter plaatse medische hulp verleend. Ondanks alle zorgvuldige medische hulp, is de man later in het ziekenhuis overleden.
In overleg met de hulpdiensten is besloten om Challenge Almere-Amsterdam na het incident niet stil te leggen. Op dringend verzoek van de familie is er voor gekozen om verder geen publieke mededelingen te doen over het incident; de familie wilde tijd om eerst directe naasten in te lichten. Dit is ook de reden dat er tot nu op onze eigen kanalen niks over is vermeld en dat er geen verandering was in onze uitingen op bijvoorbeeld social media.
Uiteraard staan wij in nauw contact met de familie. Het behoeft geen uitleg dat dit incident diepe sporen nalaat. Voor ons als organisatie, maar nog veel meer voor de nabestaanden.
We wensen familie, vrienden en kennissen héél veel sterkte met dit onbeschrijflijke verlies en zullen steun bieden waar nodig en waar mogelijk.
