The Boardroom Surfboard Show

The Boardroom Surfboard Show The Boardroom Surfboard Show highlights the surfboard manufacturing industry. The only thing that mattered. It was all about the ride--what you wore came second.

MISSION & PHILOSOPHY – THE BOARDROOM

IN THE BEGINNING IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE SURFBOARD. From ancient Polynesia to the ASP World Tour; from Waikiki to Maverick’s; from The Endless Summer to Surfline; as the eras passed what we’ve worn or said or listened to or traveled to or read or watched are just sidebars on surfing’s timeline. Because the history of our sport is the history of the surfboard. Not

hing has defined the surfing experience more than that on which we ride the waves. Nothing defines the surfer more than his (or her) surfboard. So much more than a tool, the surfboard is the philosophical icon, a sacred craft, a culturally pervasive symbol of freedom, adventure and enduring youth. This is why the surfboard builder was once the primary arbiter of surfing culture, from those early Hawaiian kahunas to the first wave of board manufactures in the early 1960s. Think back: Hobie, Hansen, Bing, Weber, Noll, Jacobs, Haut, et al. These labels --the surfboards they produced and the way this product was marketed--shaped surf culture, both literally and figuratively. Yet as the decade passed, the emphasis shifted away from the surfboard. The surf magazines became the main cultural hub, establishing ethical and aesthetic boundaries and ultimately marginalizing the role of the surfboard in their increasingly narrow portrayal of the sport. According to the surf mags throughout much of the 1980s and ‘90s there was only one way to surf: a mono-board culture. At the same time the burgeoning surf wear industry began to eclipse all other commercial elements of the sport. Riding a swell of endorsement –based marketing, these soft good companies became our cultural leaders, creating the imagery and feeding it to a media who, in turn, fed this pre-digested vision back to us: a mirror with no backing, that only reflected outward. This is not to say there’s been any sort of deliberate attempt to commoditize our passion; the surf media and soft goods manufacturers are not evil, they’re just off track. It is all about the board; has always been about the board. THE BOARDROOM feels it is time to reassert and maintain that philosophy. To put the surfboard--and the modern day kahunas who craft and design them—back at the forefront of surf culture. At THE BOARDROOM we place surf culture, its influence, its importance, its responsibility, back in the hands of the artisans who shape our sacred craft- and ultimately our future. Please join us as we showcase surfboards, essential surf equipment and gear. Because really surfers only care about two things: 1) waves and 2) the equipment to ride them with.

Psyched on my new R.

Excited is an understatement. Just need some little waves- ha.

My last custom R. was a standup paddleboard 9’ 4” quad - 20 years ago. Same color! I took that board to Australia and surfed all over on it Watego, Noosa, and a quick sojourn up to Double Island Point w Todd Bradley, Dave Parmenter & Brian Keaulana.

Thanks Rusty!

1963 Surfboards Hawaii #149 shaped by Dick Brewer in Hawaii.

This big-wave gun is one of the few survivors of the North Shore in the early 1960s. There are some gorgeous “modern classics” in the marketplace, but this board was actually in the water and being ridden alongside big wave pioneers such as Buzzy Trent, George Downing, Wally Froiseth, Pat Curren and the like. The name of the original owner is unknown; the board was found washed up on the North Shore in the early 1960s after a huge swell, stored away, and then brought to Randy Rarick to restore in the 1990s. Brewer’s initials “RB” and “ # 149” are written on the stringer just below the Surfboards Hawaii logo. The board is 10’-4” long and has a 1.5” wide old-growth redwood stringer and tailblock, along with a Dick Brewer mahogany speed fin. The board is in absolutely mint condition.

The quiet and reserved Pete Peterson was also a first-rate craftsman. He designed and built a popular line of surfboards and paddleboards for Pacific System Homes in the late ‘30s, working mainly with balsa and redwood, and also made and sold boards out of his own house for $35 (or $45 with a five-coat spar varnish finish). As surf photographer Don James later noted, Peterson was particular, almost neurotic, about the condition of his own boards. “He was a neat freak,” James remembered, “who never used any wax on the surface of his board for traction because he felt it violated the pristine look he so admired.” Peterson dominated the Pacific Coast Surf Riding Championships, early modern surfing’s biggest event, winning four times between 1928 and 1941—nobody else won more than once. Peterson didn’t surf competitively in the ‘50s, then returned with spectacular results in the early and mid-‘60s as a tandem rider.

Tony Channin and Mike Diffenderfer built boards in Del Mar at 15th St. where Jakes Del Mar is now. Soon they moved to the HILL and 50 + yrs. of surfboard building took place (and continues to take place).
