IKPEAZU FLAGS OFF GRASSROOT BOXING TALENT HUNT
The administration of Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu which has so far excelled in grassroot sports development Thursday took a bold step in the discovery of budding pugilists when it flagged off the maiden Abia State Catch Them Young Grassroot Boxing Talent Hunt.
Performing the flag off on behalf of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu at the Umuahia Township Stadium,the Permanent secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Elder Ikpeoha Friday, commended Abia state-born boxing icon,Mr Ikechukwu Okoronkwo for collaborating with the state government in the new initiative to produce boxing champions in the state for national and international competitions.
Elder Ikpeoha assured that the ministry would not relent in its support for boxing and would always channel all necessary requests to the governor for the required logistics assistance to develope the sport
Also speaking, the immediate past Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Chief Emeka George Ikwuagwu,said he encouraged Mr Ikechukwu Okoronkwo to be made Abia State Boxing Ambassador and a partner in grassroot boxing development inorder to carry out Governor Okezie Ikpeazu's mandate to the ministry to develope other sports alongside football. He charged The sports ministry and the sports council to make maximum use of the collaboration with the boxing legend to put Abia State in national and global boxing map.
Mr Ikechukwu Okoronkwo who was the first boxer to win gold for Abia State when he emerged champion at the National Boxing Championship in Lagos in 1992 said he decided to bring his expertise and resources to develope boxing in Abia State because there's no place like home , adding that the grassroot sports development drive of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu deserves the support of all.
The Arochukwu-born boxing ace said that he would not rest until Abia became the boxing destination of Nigeria.
