The Dance of Time
By midday, the festival erupts in color and sound. The Nwai Oegworok (Kagoro warriors) leap and spin in their feathered headdresses, their footwork telling stories of bravery. The women, adorned in beads that clink like rain, sway to the kakaki trumpets, their voices rising in songs older than memory. I join them, my feet remembering steps taught to me before I could read. It’s more than dance—it’s a language. When my cousin once missed a step,
