MONDAY SPOTLIGHT

Thelma Okoh is a seasoned marketing communications and public relations professional whose career spans strategic communications, brand management, corporate reputation and digital communication. She currently serves as Registrar/Secretary to Council of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN), contributing to professional standards and the development of Nigeria's marketing industry.

She is also Principal Consultant at Winstarbel Communications and has held leadership positions within the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, including General Secretary of its Lagos State Chapter and membership of the Institute's Governing Council. Her career reflects a sustained commitment to professional development and strengthening Nigeria's marketing and communications ecosystem.

Her connection with the Nigeria Digital PR Summit goes back to its early days. As General Secretary of the Lagos NIPR when the Summit began, Thelma contributed to its planning and development and provided financial support that helped the platform take root. Her commitment to the Summit has continued through the years.

She has remained particularly interested in the intersection of technology, consumer behaviour and human connection. Speaking on AI and digital platforms in public relations, she noted: “AI is not only about automation but also about augmentation. It's collaboration.” She has also identified AI transformation, changing consumer mindsets, purchase behaviour and cultural currents as forces reshaping how brands understand and engage their audiences.

That thinking carried through to the launch of NIMN's landmark study with Lagos Business School, “Community, Culture and Connection: Re-imagining the New Market.” Describing Nigeria's evolving marketplace, she said the New Market “is no longer just a physical space or a digital platform; it is a communal ecosystem where trust is the primary currency.”

Beyond her institutional roles, Thelma has championed women in marketing, closing NIMN's inaugural LeadHers in Marketing Conference with a call to empower women marketers and inspire the next generation of industry leaders.

As Co-founder of Cihan Digital Academy, she has also championed practical AI capacity building among practitioners and young people, describing AI as “a game-changer, transforming industries and revolutionising how we work and live.” Her commitment to the next generation extends to mentorship, skills development and initiatives focused on emerging trends in marketing.

These perspectives capture an important thread running through Thelma's career: technology may be transforming the tools of communication, but trust, culture, community and human connection remain at the heart of influence.

Thelma represents an important bridge between public relations and marketing, bringing professional experience, institutional leadership and a strong interest in the future of communication to both fields.

MONDAY SPOTLIGHT

With over three decades in public relations, government communication and crisis management, Yushau Shuaib has built a reputation as one of Nigeria's notable voices in strategic and security communication.

As CEO of Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR), publishers of PRNigeria, Economic Confidential and Spokespersons Digest, he has shaped platforms that influence conversations around security, governance and public interest.

His crisis communication expertise was honed during the Boko Haram insurgency, earning him the 2016 IPRA Golden World Award for Crisis Management. He also championed FOSSRA, bringing spokespersons from major security and response agencies together around coordinated communication.

Today, Shuaib is exploring the intersection of AI, misinformation and crisis communication, while investing in the next generation through the PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship.

His career offers a powerful lesson: digital influence and crisis communication are increasingly the same conversation.

MONDAY SPOTLIGHT

Kwame Senou has spent nearly two decades navigating the political, cultural and business currents that shape public opinion across Sub-Saharan Africa, advising business leaders, institutions and governments on building trust and meaningful stakeholder engagement.

He is Founder and Executive Director of THOP, The Holding Opinion & Public, headquartered in Abidjan with a presence in Lagos, leading strategic communications and public affairs initiatives across fifteen countries in West and Central Africa. His career began in journalism, first as a reporter and later as Editor-in-Chief in Benin, before he moved into senior leadership positions within global communications networks. Speaking recently on the evolving demands placed on the profession, he made the distinction plain, noting that "PR that is tactical is no longer relevant. They have to be equipped to advise."

He also serves as President of the THOP Institute, a think tank advancing the role of strategic communication in economic development and public policy innovation across Africa, and convener of its International Conference on Governments and Communication, a platform fostering dialogue between governments and citizens during periods of complex crisis. Reflecting on Africa's tendency to reach for blunt regulatory instruments in his recent commentary on public interest regulation, he cautioned that when fiscal pressure exceeds what firms and households can absorb, "the result is substitution, evasion and declining regulatory legitimacy, not behavioural change."

Kwame is Vice Chair of Brand Africa and a former member of the Global Advisory Board of the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA). He is also a member of the International Communications Consultancy Organisation (ICCO) and the International Advertising Association (IAA). His work has earned international recognition, including the Silver Pitcher Award, the SABRE Awards Africa, and a place on PRovoke Media's Innovator 25 for EMEA. A sought-after speaker, he delivered a TEDx talk in Libreville, Gabon, titled "Breaking Borders," and champions an inclusive vision of leadership that strengthens connections between Francophone and Anglophone Africa.

He holds a Master's degree in Private Law from the University of Abomey-Calavi and has furthered his leadership expertise through executive education at Harvard Business School and The Wharton School.

Isime Esene has spent over 14 years building media relations, branding, and digital strategy expertise across government, education, and media sectors in Nigeria and internationally.

He currently serves as Special Assistant on Media and Communications to Nigeria's Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, leading the Ministry's media strategy, stakeholder engagement, and reputation management efforts. He has directed communications for several high-profile initiatives, including the World Bank-supported Project BRIDGE, 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, Girls in ICT, National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, and DevsinGovernment, and led media strategy for the Ministry's participation at the 70th and 80th United Nations General Assembly, the inaugural International Submarine Cable Resilience Summit with the ITU, and the 2026 African Telecommunications Union Conference of Plenipotentiaries hosted by Nigeria.

Reflecting on his 2025 Nigeria Digital PR Award win, organised by the Nigeria Digital PR Summit, he credited it to "the power of creativity and purpose-driven communication in shaping narratives."

He is also Lead Consultant at Vive Africa, a research-led communications strategy firm helping educational institutions build sustainable engagement across Africa, advising institutions including Loughborough University, University of Sussex, University of Warwick, University of Reading, University of Dundee, University of Roehampton, Lagos Business School, and University of Birmingham. His firm developed the Nigeria Market Sentiment & Study Motivations Report, Africa's first indigenous research exploring international education trends, a project that earned a 2023 SABRE Award for Superior Achievement in Research and Planning.

On the philosophy behind his work, shaped in part by his years as Editor of YNaija.com, he has said simply that "credibility is the foundation of communication."

Isime holds a BSc in Computer Science from Lagos State University and is pursuing an MBA at Heriot-Watt University's Edinburgh Business School. He is a member of NIPR, CIPR (UK), and APM (UK).
