Manchester United fans were made to wait to see their side take the lead against Middlesbrough after Cristiano Ronaldo dragged his penalty wide of the Boro goal

Cristiano Ronaldo missed with a useless penalty against Middlesbrough on Friday night and appeared to immediately find an excuse for his error.

The Manchester United forward was unable to give his side the lead from 12 yards in their FA Cup fourth round tie with the Championship club at Old Trafford.

United were awarded a penalty in the 18th minute after the returning Paul Pogba was fouled inside the area by Boro full-back Anfernee Dijksteel.

Luckily for Ronaldo, who turns 37 on Saturday, Jadon Sancho opened the scoring just minutes later as he impressively bagged his third goal for the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed the target from the penalty spot

Having taken on the penalty responsibility, Ronaldo uncharacteristically missed the target completely with his spot-kick.

Following a brief wait as referee Anthony Taylor ensured Joe Lumley stayed on his goal-line, the Portuguese striker dragged the ball wide of the keeper's right-hand post.

Lumley had gone the right way, although it is unknown whether he would have saved Ronaldo's fiercely struck shot had it been on target.

Immediately after missing, Ronaldo appeared to look at the turf around the penalty spot, as if that had been the reason for his miss.

Was the pitch to blame for Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty miss? Let us know in the comments section below.

However, those watching at home were not convinced the pitch was to blame and fans quickly took to social media to mock Ronaldo.

One fan tweeted: “Ronaldo slices a penalty. Ronaldo looks at the turf on the penalty spot. Funny.”

Another joked: “Ronaldo looking accusingly at the penalty spot… On the perfectly manicured Old Trafford pitch.”

A third supporter sarcastically added: “Yeah Ronaldo… the penalty spot was
