Losing would have been tough on City, who controlled large spells of the match – and thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, it wasn’t something they had to worry about.
Image
Sterling’s equaliser took him to 23 goals in the Champions League, which is only bettered by two English players – Wayne Rooney (30) and Paul Scholes (24). There’s every chance that Sterling will go on to surpass the pair, with years left in his legs.
With this victory, City ensured top spot in Group A and will be seeded for the Round of 16. They are the second-favourites in our tournament projections to win the 2021-22 trophy at 17.8%, behind only Bayern Munich at 18.4%.
For PSG, they also qualified for the knockout stages tonight, but have RB Leipzig to thank for that, following their emphatic win in Brugge. They’ll have to make do with second place in the group, however, meaning they’ll be unseeded and must play away from home in the second leg of their Last 16 tie – not ideal when you’ve only won four of your last 12 knockout matches away (D1 L7), although at least the away goal rule is no more.

Cristiano Ronaldo maintained his impressive scoring streak in the Champions League as Manchester United secured a 2-0 win over Villarreal in Group F.
Image
As expected, Michael Carrick made some bold changes to the line-up following the chastening defeat at Watford on Saturday. Both Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial were named in the starting eleven as Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford dropped to the bench. Alex Telles also started at left-back in the absence of Luke Shaw.
Despite the change in personnel, Manchester United looked far from convincing for the majority of the game. Ultimately, it was Cristiano Ronaldo who yet again came to their rescue. The 36-year-old has now scored six goals in five Champions League games this term.
However, a lot of the credit has to go to David de Gea for keeping Manchester United in the game till the 78th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock.
The Spaniard was at the peak of his powers for the visitors as he thwarted multiple attempts from Villarreal to open the scoring. Most notably, he produced an excellent diving save to deny Manu Trigueros just before the hour mark at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
It was after the introduction of Fernandes and Rashford from the bench that Manchester United forced the initiative. The Red Devils found the opening goal of the game through a slice of fortune.
Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli tried to play out from the back and Manchester United midfielder Fred applied pressure on his counterpart Etienne Capoue to force an opening. The ball fell kindly to Cristiano Ronaldo and he dinked it above Rulli to maintain his streak.
Summer-signing Jadon Sancho then netted his first goal for Manchester United in the 89th minute to complete the rout. The forward has had a difficult time settling in at Old Trafford since his move from Borussia Dortmund and looked relieved to have broken the duck.
In the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo setting the tone for yet another Champions League win for ManU

Manchester United secured their spot in the Champions League knockout stages on Tuesday evening with victory over Villarreal.
United had to withstand some heavy pressure from their Spanish hosts, before taking the lead against the run of play through Cristiano Ronaldo.
Jadon Sancho grabbed his first United goal to make the result certain. Here, Sportsmail's JOE BERNSTEIN rates the players in their first apperarance since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure.
Manchester United were indebted to him, yet again. Two early saves were decent, the right-handed stretch to keep out Trigueros in the second half at 0-0 was world-class. No manager would leave him out
New regime, but same weakness in possession from United’s right-back. Was lucky not to cost his team when he lost the ball inside his own half. Rightly escaped penalty shout for handball
The most reliable defender when United were under the cosh in the opening 30 minutes. Repeatedly blocked and headed away danger and acknowledged a slack pass that almost let Villarreal in
Clean sheet will do the United captain a world of good even though he still looked a bit off the pace. It’ll have pleased Carrick that he still tried to build from the back but misses weekend trip to Chelsea
Showed excellent energy and delivery from set pieces as he deputised for Shaw but made several defensive mistakes including one that set up Trigueros in the first half
Made up for a few hairy moments by robbing Capoue to set up the opening goal and pressed in the build-up to the second. Roy Keane will never be convinced but the Brazilian will play until United sign someone better
Not in his best form but has a strength of character United need in hard times. Improved as the game went on but one mistimed tackle that set up Parejo underlined he’s not a natural holder
United fans finally saw a £73million player. Sancho played as if the shackles had come off, he’d already been foiled once by Villarreal goalie Rulli before firing in his first goal

Cristiano Ronaldo has now seen four managers depart in four seasons
31 minutes ago / autty
For the fourth season running, Cristiano Ronaldo has been at a club where the manager has either left or been sacked.
Image
If this had happened once or twice, you'd think it was merely a coincidence. But a pattern is starting to emerge and it could well be that Ronaldo is actually the problem.
The Portuguese star's match-winning abilities are well known. Even aged 36, Ronaldo has shown several times already at Manchester United that he can still bend a game to his will.
Image
But does his superstar status and influence over a dressing room make it so much more difficult for a manager to do their job?
Is Ronaldo too sulky when he doesn't get his way, leading to friction with those trying to manage him?
We examine what happened with each of those four bosses and Ronaldo's role in their departure.
Massimiliano Allegri (Juventus)
Allegri's trophy-laden five year first spell with Juventus and Ronaldo's stint with the club only overlapped for one season.
On the surface of it, with Ronaldo scoring 28 goals during his first season in Italian football and winning the Scudetto, it seemed like a good match.
But by the end of that campaign, it boiled down to a simple ultimatum for the manager - either Ronaldo goes, or I do.
Earlier this year, Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that Allegri sat down with Juventus chief Andrea Agnelli and encouraged the club to move Ronaldo on even after just one season.
Image
Allegri believed his presence was stalling the growth of the team and blocking the pathway of young players to regular game time.
There was some truth to this - Ronaldo started 30 of the 32 Serie A matches he was fit and available for that season. He also started nine of Juve's 10 Champions League matches prior to being stunned by Ajax in the quarter-final.

Andriy Shevchenko's managerial debut in Serie A ends in defeat against Jose Mourinho

Ghanaian teenage substitute Felix Afena-Gyan's first senior goals earned Jose Mourinho's AS Roma a 2-0 victory at Genoa in Serie A on Sunday.
Image
Henrikh Mkhitaryan thought he had given Roma the lead in the first half with a thunderous strike, only for the eagle-eyed referee to rule the goal out after spotting a handball from Tammy Abraham as the effort flew past the English striker.
The visitors looked like they were going to have to settle for a frustrating draw going into the latter stages of the match as Andriy Shevchenko's Genoa frustrated their opponents in the new coach's first game in charge.
Image
However, 18-year-old Afena-Gyan had other ideas and he scored in the 82nd minute to edge his side in front, running to celebrate with a jubilant Mourinho after finding the net, before curling a stoppage-time second to seal the win.
The victory, just Roma's second in eight matches in all competitions, moved Mourinho's men up to fifth in the standings, while Genoa stay 18th.
Afena-Gyan was delighted with his performance.
"Mourinho is a great person, a great manager and a great coach. He gives you the motivation to learn every day. I am very happy he is here," he told DAZN.

Mourinho explained why the youngster came to him to celebrate his opening goal.
"I promised him a very expensive pair of shoes, for 800 euros, and he came to me to make sure I didn't forget," he added.
"I really like his coldness, his physicality but above all his humility.

Reports of more Icardi cheating: They go to a bathroom, the girl comes out first, he comes out after
Just hours have passed since Mauro Icardi and Wanda Nara published a set of explosive photos to confirm that they were back together, but a new alleged act of infidelity by the Paris Saint-Germain striker has now been revealed.
Image
The couple have endured a difficult period in their relationship after Wanda Nara found out that Icardi had been sending flirtatious messages with the model China Suarez.
Although the drama looked to have been resolved, journalist Rodrigo Lussich has revealed on the show 'Intrusos' that it was not the first time that Icardi had flirted with another woman.
"[Mauro] Icardi had an encounter with a woman during his holidays with Wanda Nara," said Lussich.
The incident is alleged to have taken place during their holiday in Ibiza in 2018, when the couple spent the night at Lio nightclub.
"Everything happens in a private club called Lio, where all the players go," said Lussich.
"That night an illusionist was performing at the club where Mauro and Wanda [Nara] were, and he was sacked the following day because his wife told Wanda that she had seen Icardi in a suspicious situation.
"Wanda and Mauro were watching the show, and a girl who was working there walked beside Icardi.
"He watched her constantly without taking his eyes off her, and she stopped to chat very close to him.
"Then they both look at each other, she goes to another part of the club, Icardi gets up and they go to a bathroom together.
"Minutes later, the girl comes out first, Icardi comes out after."
The journalist went on to reveal that although Wanda knew about it, she did not want to reveal what had happened.
"It is obvious that there was an argument between Wanda and Mauro, but that time Wanda did not want to tell the world about it," said Lussich.

Serie A leaders Napoli lost for the first time this season as Inter Milan reinvigorated their own title bid with a 3-2 win at the San Siro.
Image
Inter, the defending champions, cut the gap on Napoli and AC Milan to four points and ended Napoli's status as the last remaining unbeaten team across Europe's five major leagues, a day after Milan were beaten 4-3 by Fiorentina.
Dries Mertens, who had set up a pulsating finale with Napoli's late second goal, missed the chance to equalise in injury time when he blazed a shot over.
It was Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti's first return to the San Siro since he was fired by Inter despite leading them to a fourth-place finish in 2019.
Lautaro Martinez netted the winning goal on the counter attack after an hour, set up by compatriot Joaquin Correa, who ran almost from one area to the other to make the goal.
Image
Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic preserved the victory with a brilliant save to deny Mario Rui in injury time, turning the ball onto the crossbar, before Mertens' miss.
The visitors had struck first in the 17th when Piotr Zielinski won possession from Nicolo Barella, then ran forward to smash the ball from Lorenzo Insigne's pass in under the crossbar.
Hakan Calhanoglu levelled with a penalty, awarded after Kalidou Koulibaly was penalised by VAR for hand ball after blocking Barella's shot with his left arm.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi was booked for his furious reaction before the spot-kick was eventually awarded and scored, as was Koulibaly.
It prompted a furious reaction before the break, when Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina denied Barella. Inter scored from the resulting corner just before the interval, when Ospina was powerless to keep out Ivan Perisic's header at the near post.
Martinez scored but Mertens ensured a lively finale when he pulled one back in the 78th minute with a brilliant shot in under the crossbar. It was his 137th goal for Napoli.
There was another holdup for another clash of heads, between Ospina

Aaron Ramsey's move to Juventus hasn't turned out to be the success he was hoping for after lengthy spells on the sidelines, training methods and a frosty relationship with Massimiliano Allegri have left him frustrated in Turin.
Image
The 30-year-old moved to the Serie A side on a free transfer in 2019 after over a decade at Arsenal.
But, despite excelling for country - three goals in his last three matches for Wales - his performances haven't transported to club level.
Frequent injury problems have led to a disrupted career at the Allianz Stadium. Ramsey has spent more days - 164 - on the treatment table, than games played for Juventus - just 70.
Ramsey has found himself out of favour since Allegri's return to the club, making just five appearances across all competitions, including one start, this season and Juve are growing desperate to offload his £400,000-per-week salary.
Sportsmail reported last week that the midfielder is aiming to be back in the Premier League by the time Wales tackle their World Cup play-off early next year.
The Welshman isn't short of suitors in England but his financial demands could be make or break for some clubs.
Here, Sportsmail takes a look at Ramsey's most likely destination as he plots his return to the Premier League.
Newcastle appear to be the most strongly interested club since the Magpies' £305million Saudi-led takeover.
The newly mega-rich club have inevitably been linked to the midfielder with Amanda Staveley and co plotting moves to reinforce their ranks as they gear up to face a relegation battle in the second-half of the campaign.
Ramsey is currently pocketing a gross salary of €14m (£12m) and is expected to demand a similar figure but the North East outfit are are now the richest club in the world and are 'not scared' of his wages, according to The Mirror.

Zinedine Zidane is not interested in becoming the new manager of Manchester United.
Image
United approached former Real Madrid manager Zidane following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure.
However, according to BBC Sport Zidane has no intention of taking charge of United at this stage.
Image
During his time at Real Madrid Zidane worked with Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane, who are both now at United.
Guilliem Balague does report, though, that Zidane would consider replacing Mauricio Pochettino at PSG if the Argentine heads to United.
Zidane is also interested in managing the French national team, with current boss Didier Deschamps' contract expiring after next year's World Cup.
Across his two spells as Real Madrid manager, Zidane won three Champions Leagues and two LaLiga titles.
Image
The 49-year-old hasn't managed since his departure from Real at the end of last season.
Pochettino is among the favourites to take over from Solskjaer, whose departure from United was officially confirmed on Sunday.
Solskjaer's spell in charge of the club came to an end after United suffered a 4-1 defeat away to Watford.
Whoever succeeds Solskjaer will have much work to do, with United currently in ninth place in the Premier League.

Manchester United have reportedly contacted Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers as they look to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Image
The 20-time champions of England relieved the Norwegian of his duties on Sunday morning, less than 24 hours after an embarrassing 4-1 defeat at Watford extended United's slump to four losses in the last five Premier League outings.
United have placed Michael Carrick in interim charge but, according to The Sun, are moving quickly to appoint a new permanent manager and have made contact with Rodgers.
Image
The report adds the Old Trafford hierarchy would be prepared to pay Leicester £8 million in compensation to lure the 48-year-old away from the King Power Stadium.
Speaking ahead of Leicester's match against Chelsea, Rodgers said it was 'really disrespectful' to ask him to comment on the rumours linking him with the United job.
'There's two things. Firstly it is really disrespectful to ask the question when you have a manager in place, a good manager and a good man, who is working hard at the club.
'Secondly I can't really comment on it, because it is not something that is real.

'I am here as the Leicester City manager, proud to be here, privileged to be here and fully committed to the players, the club, the ownership.
That's about it, all the other noise around that is something we can't control.'
By Sunday night, Betfair had installed the former Liverpool boss as a 7/2 favourite to replace Solskjaer at Old Trafford.
Rodgers led the list of candidates ahead of former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino, a 5/1 and 6/1 shot respectively.
As reported by Sportsmail, the latter would be ready to quit PSG and return to the Premier League because he is unhappy in the French capital.
The former Tottenham boss is said to be frustrated at managing a dressing-room with big egos like Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe and lives in a hotel in Paris, while his family remain in London.
