Press Release | NUGA Updates

This week, we spotlight Kolawole Esther Anuoluwapo, the 2025/2026 FISU Student Ambassador representing Nigeria at the University of Ilorin, whose journey continues to demonstrate the growing impact of Nigerian students within the global university sports movement.

Esther has been accepted into the prestigious FISU Springboard Programme, a highly competitive international initiative designed to connect emerging sport leaders with experienced professionals across the global university sports ecosystem.

Her selection follows a series of impactful contributions within the University of Ilorin community, including the establishment of the UniIlorin Sport Medical Team, recognised as the first student-led sport medicine team in a Nigerian university.

Through her leadership, students have gained valuable hands-on experience in athlete welfare and sports operations, while preparations continue for a Sport Careers Seminar expected to engage thousands of students on opportunities within the sports industry.

As part of the programme, Esther will be mentored by Melissa Hartzell, Development Director for the 2029 FISU Summer World University Games in North Carolina, USA, gaining exposure to international best practices in sport development, event management, fundraising, and stakeholder engagement.

This achievement reflects the opportunities that emerge when students combine leadership, service, and a passion for sports development.

πŸ‘ Congratulations on this global recognition.

This is what the NUGA community represents: students creating impact, building networks, and shaping the future of university sports beyond the field of play.

πŸ‘ Celebrate her. Tag her. Show some love.

| Community & Conversations

The conversation doesn’t stop on the court, this is Team Talk Thursday πŸ’¬

Today’s question:

Would you rather have a talented team with poor chemistry, or an average team with strong chemistry? πŸ€”πŸ€

To explore this, we hear from two voices within the University of Ibadan basketball community:

πŸ€ Olofintila Tomiwa Ayomide, Team Captain, University of Ibadan Basketball Team

πŸ€ Jucal Adefokun, University of Ibadan Basketball Team

Because basketball, like every team sport, is about more than individual talent.

Great teams aren't just built on skill.
They're built on trust.
Communication.
Commitment.
And the ability to work together when it matters most.

Talent may win highlights...
But chemistry builds consistency.

So we want to hear from you πŸ‘‡

Which would you choose?

πŸ”₯ A talented team with poor chemistry
🀝 An average team with strong chemistry

Menstrual Hygiene Day | Health & Awareness ❀️

Where dignity, health, awareness, and support create safer and more inclusive communities.

Observed every year on May 28, Menstrual Hygiene Day raises awareness about the importance of menstrual health, hygiene education, and access to proper sanitary care for girls and women around the world.

Menstruation is a natural part of life, yet many still face stigma, misinformation, and limited access to hygiene support.

Did you know? πŸ‘‡

🩸 Good menstrual hygiene helps prevent infections and supports overall health and well-being.

πŸŽ’ Access to menstrual products and education helps students stay confident, active, and engaged in school activities.

🏟️ For female student-athletes, proper hygiene, hydration, nutrition, and body care are important for comfort, performance, and confidence during training and competition.

🀝 Supportive environments help break stigma and encourage open, healthy conversations around menstrual health.

For the campus community and student-athletes, menstrual hygiene is not just about health, it is about dignity, confidence, education, and inclusion.

Every girl deserves support.
Every student deserves awareness.
Every conversation helps break stigma.

Today’s reminder:

🩸 Promote menstrual health awareness
🩸 Support safe hygiene practices
🩸 Encourage open conversations
🩸 Create supportive communities

Because health, dignity, and confidence matter every day.

One community.
One conversation.
One step toward better awareness.

Eid El-Kabir | Faith, Sacrifice & Unity πŸŒ™

Where faith, gratitude, sacrifice, and togetherness remind us of the values that strengthen communities.

Celebrated by Muslims around the world, Eid El-Kabir reflects the spirit of obedience, generosity, compassion, and sharing with others.

For student-athletes and the campus community, the season serves as a reminder that unity, discipline, patience, and sacrifice are values that shape growth both on and off the field.

As families, friends, teammates, and communities come together in celebration, may this season bring peace, joy, and renewed hope to every home.

Today’s reminder:

πŸŒ™ Celebrate with gratitude
πŸŒ™ Show kindness and generosity
πŸŒ™ Strengthen community and unity
πŸŒ™ Share joy with others

Because beyond competition, humanity, faith, and togetherness matter most.

From all of us at NUGA,

Word of the Day | Community & Conversation

Every movement carries intention. Today’s word takes us into the foundation of basketball performance.

At NUGA, Word of the Day is where language, sport, and learning meet, inviting our community to explore the meanings behind the words we hear every day on the field, court, track, and beyond the classroom.

Today’s word is FOOTWORK.

In basketball, footwork is more than movement. It is balance, coordination, timing, and control under pressure.

Long before modern basketball existed, movement determined survival. Warriors, hunters, and fighters relied on quick reactions, balance, and positioning to gain advantage.

When basketball evolved, the principle remained the same:
your feet often determine how effective your game becomes.

For athletes, footwork shows up every day.

In basketball πŸ€, footwork creates better defense, balance, and shot control.
In football ⚽, footwork improves agility, movement, and quick direction changes.
In athletics πŸƒ, footwork affects speed, coordination, and explosive movement.

And beyond sports, it matters too.

In life πŸŽ“, footwork is preparation.
It is learning the basics before chasing the spotlight.
It is mastering discipline before expecting results.

Same principle. Different battlefield.

Today, footwork means:
πŸ‘£ Building strong foundations
πŸ‘£ Moving with control and confidence
πŸ‘£ Reacting quickly under pressure
πŸ‘£ Staying balanced in difficult moments
πŸ‘£ Mastering the basics consistently

Because before the highlights…
before the crossovers…
before the big moments…

Comes footwork.

Read. Reflect. Join the conversation.

| Thought & Engagement

Topic Tuesday is where the NUGA community explores real conversations shaping student-athlete experiences.

From mindset to performance, growth pressure, this space encourages learning, sharing, and reflection across campus sports.

Today’s topic:
Common Basketball Injuries & Prevention πŸ€

Basketball is fast, physical, and intense, which means injuries can happen both on and off the court.

Some common upper-body injuries include:
β€’ Finger sprains
β€’ Wrist injuries
β€’ Elbow strains
β€’ Shoulder dislocations
β€’ Concussions

On the lower body, athletes often experience:
β€’ Ankle sprains
β€’ Jumper’s knee (patellar tendinitis)
β€’ Patellofemoral pain syndrome
β€’ Hamstring strains
β€’ Quadriceps strains

These injuries can happen due to:
β€’ Overuse
β€’ Poor landing technique
β€’ Muscle or ligament overstretching
β€’ Catching the ball incorrectly during play

But the good news is many of these injuries can be prevented.

Here’s how:
β€’ Strength and coordination training improve stability and body control
β€’ Wear proper basketball footwear
β€’ Maintain good nutrition and hydration
β€’ Go for proper medical screening when necessary

Your health is part of your game.

πŸŽ₯ Look out for our video highlight as we explore basketball injuries, prevention tips, and athlete wellness.
