【Ways of Seeing an Island — School Tour · Third Stop】 brought us to Kuen Cheng High School, Kuala Lumpur.
Together with the students, we watched The Light on the Sea — a documentary that opens up conversations on island life, local culture, and the relationship between people and the environment. Beyond Pangkor’s fisheries, ecology, and everyday realities, the film invites us to reflect on how we continue to understand place and ways of living amid change and modern development.
Director Tan Choo Harn and PULAU: Field Notes on Island Modernity author Leong Xin Yuan also shared their thoughts on seeing, documenting, and writing. In an age shaped by AI, why do we still need to step into communities, observe closely, and listen to stories rooted in place? Because lived experience, memory, and human connection remain irreplaceable.
Thank you to the teachers and students for your thoughtful participation. May every act of seeing become a starting point for understanding place, environment, and life a little more deeply.
