Shape Your Plate 2013 ended with a bang last year...
This year, on the last week of March 24th to 28th, the class of ND111 proudly presents to the IMU community, Health Promotion Week 2014 with the theme:
"Safe Food, Saves Lives"
Food safety has been defined as the conditions and measures that are necessary during the production, processing, storage, distribution and preparation of food to ens
ure that it is safe, sound, wholesome and fit for human consumption (World Health Organization [WHO], 1984). Food handlers (including you and I) who neglect the basic rule of food preparation such as mishandling and taking hygiene practice for granted, contribute to the outbreaks of food poisoning. Did you know?
1. In the US alone as reported by CDC, 76 million cases of foodborne disease each year with 325,000 cases requiring hospitalization and 5,000 ending in death.
2. Food poisoning is one of the top 5 most notifiable diseases in Malaysia?
3. Incidence rates of food poisoning in some of the cities around West Malaysia are 85.1 (Kelantan), 83.4 (Terengganu) and 75.1 (Kuala Lumpur).
4. Many cases of food poisoning in Malaysia were unreported (number of cases are more than that recorded!).
5. Food poisoning can result in death.
6. Vulnerable groups (infants, pregnant women and elderly) are more susceptible to foodborne illness than healthy adults. Therefore, with those statements in mind there is a growing concern over the increasing rates and cases of food poisoning around the country and definitely an issues requiring everyone's serious attention. This one-week long event will allow ND111 to address the different issues related to food safety and safe food handling practices. The event features many fun-filled activities to help facilitate active learning and participation from the Bukit Jalil campus community. Not to mention many prizes and goodies bags are up for grabs as well! Do come by the week and you will be blessed with the knowledge for safer food and practices.
