Walking Through the Mirror of Time with YAB Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi
On 7 February 2026, at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre (MIECC), GOPIO Malaysia had the distinct honour of presenting a 240-year historical exhibition on the Malaysian People of Indian Origin (PIO) to Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, and Honourable Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India.
The exhibition, comprising eighteen curated panels, traced the documented journey of the Malaysian PIO community from 1786 to 2026. It highlighted the early arrivals under British administration, the development of plantations, railways and civic infrastructure, contributions in administrative service and professional sectors, the establishment of Tamil schools, temples and Gurudwaras, the growth of Tamil media, and the evolution of entrepreneurship and industrial participation.
It also acknowledged solemn chapters of history, including the forced conscription of thousands of Malayan Indians during the Siam–Burma Death Railway in the Second World War, and the participation of many in the Indian National Army. These were presented not as isolated memories, but as part of a larger narrative of sacrifice, resilience and nation-building.
During the brief walk-through, both Prime Ministers engaged attentively with the archival materials. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s warm references reflected the shared human dimensions behind public office, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interest in the provenance of historical photographs underscored the importance of documentation and evidentiary integrity.
The moment was brief, yet meaningful. It affirmed that the Malaysian Indian narrative forms an integral part of Malaysia’s constitutional and plural identity, and that diaspora history can serve as a bridge of mutual respect between Malaysia and India.
This exhibition was made possible through collective effort, supported by archival research, thoughtful visual curation, careful operational coordination and diplomatic facilitation under the leadership of GOPIO Malaysia, in collaboration with the High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur.
We are grateful for the opportunity to present our community’s history with dignity, responsibility and humility.
History was shared thoughtfully.
It was received respectfully.
And it continues to belong to the nation.
