Continued Clean up
Just before Ramadhan we continued to clean up D'Bayou as part our preparation to have our Raya there. A major part of the effort was focussed on D'Balai which was in quite a mess. It was good to see D'Balai's riverbank regaining some of its former self. There's more to be done . . . at the very least we have started some work, bit by bit.

Rejuvenating D'Bayou

We are hoping 2026 is the year when we rejuvenate, reinvigorate D’Bayou. We had, due to various circumstances, not paid due attention to D’Bayou since the big flood of 2021.

D’Bayou has huge potential which should be realised so that many can enjoy the natural, kampong offerings of D’Bayou. As a start, some early cleanup was undertaken. More needs to be done . . . let’s all enjoy D’Bayou again.

Merdeka Weekend

It was good to be at D’Bayou for the Merdeka weekend. It’s a way to be “merdeka” from the city . . . back to nature, the river, the pondok on the pond. 5 of our cucus joined us. They helped plant some more “anak jagung” and ended the visit with a dip in the river. May the anak jagung grow into nice juicy stalks of corn. May we, as a family, have more trips to what our cucu call as “kebun”.

The Stinky Prickly Ones

This year we are blessed with a good fruit season. Our solitary bachang tree yielded 2000 + fruits (will share about that separately).

For the past few days, we have been making daily trips to D'Bayou to collect durians. Our average is 10 pieces per day which is good enough for us. If we were to include those messed by the marauding monkeys, consumed by the tupai or taken away by fellow humans, it would have averaged 20 fruits per day. Alhamdullilah, very happy nonetheless to have that 10 per day. A large number is given away with some sold per request.

Below are pics of four varieties . . . creamy custard to bitter smooth. Next to harvest are the mangosteens.

Expectations . . . vs reality

This is the time of the year when fruits start to show in abundance on the branches. They all look good . . . green, unripe with no interests from predators (humans and animals) in touching them. We did all we could to make them grow and mature in peace (fertilizing, mowing the undergrowth etc). All that remain is seeing whether our expectations (that we get to harvest and taste the fruits) get realised.

Meanwhile, we enjoy taking photos of what to expect.

Jagong . . . Corn . . . Maize

The maize (jagong) our cucus planted in February have reached 60 days of age. That means they have grown well and produced jagong for harvesting. Since the cucu planted them, it was only proper that she harvested the matured jagong.

The seeds we used is the Sweet Corn Bi-Color Double Joy 122 from JomTanam. It seems to match well with the soil at D'Bayou. Perhaps, we should try other varieties too for different taste and yield.

The taste ? ALL the cucus said they are good . . . this means we need to plant few more this year.

Bachang - Machang

It's good to see D'Bayou kicking off 2025 fruit season with our "bachang kampong". The tall tree displays very beautiful pink flowers with pleasant aromatic scent. Our bachang is not of high commercial value but it is still lovely to have them (if you wish for some, do holler). May the flowers turn into healthy fruits, similar to what we have been generously graced with in the past.

psst . . . our durian trees have also started to bear flowers. How many will survive remain unknown esp as it's been raining heavily of late (which the durian trees do no particularly like)

Back To D'Bayou

We have unfortunately, been "neglecting" D'Bayou since Oct of 2024. The good news (at least to us) is that we are back at D'Bayou. We finally managed to clean up after the river bank breech of October 2024, and actually slept overnight at D'Bayou after a 5-month absence.

The cucus tag along to help us plant back some fruits and vegetables. May the "magic wand" of our cucu yield some bountiful harvest for all to enjoy.

May we have the ability for more trips to D'Bayou.

Langsat – abundant in 2024

There is always a “balancing” act in play with nature. This season we had our share of durians . . . good enough for us (not as abundant as prior years). The low yield of the durians was balanced, alhamdullilah by an abundance of langsat. Interestingly, it was just from just two of the 4 langsat trees.

Langsat is best plucked manually. As much as I wanted to, some of the langsat could not be plucked as they were not only too high, but also on small branches. I have grown fond of climbing the langsat tree (with caution) to pluck some of the ripe fruits (as a way of remembering my days as a young boy climbing jambu trees after primary school class). That said, I dare not risked the higher and smaller branches. The serious climbing and plucking was thus done by some of the Orang Asli boys in the neighbourhood.

What about next year? Hope I am still around and still be able to climb trees to enjoy the harvest of D’Bayou insyaAllah.

Fruit Season Still On – Other Than Durians

2024 durian season for us is over (ate our last durian about a week ago). But durians are not the only ones for us to enjoy . . . we have an abundant of cempedak (“Artocarpus integer”). Not sure if there is an English name as it is not jackfruit (nangka). When ripe, it gives a very strong aroma (not as “stinky” as durians). Eaten raw or fried in batter, they are delicious. Ours however tend to be consumed by the squirrels and insects. The two pythons and the five monitor lizards at our kebun are not enough to keep them at bay.

We had our fried cempedak shared with friends and families, apart from selling some fresh cempedaks. We have more cempedaks than durians this year and with it . . . more fun as well.

May the harvest be just as good for years to come.

Fruit Season – Durians?

With every fruit season, durians come to mind. There’s nothing wrong with that. For us this year, alhamdulillah 3 of our old trees bore fruits. Each presents its own type of durians . . . sweet creamy to sweet bitter, from small to large.

Given that we are not at D’Bayou, getting the durians is always a test. Primarily, that of letting go to either the squirrels or humans illegally entering our land in pursuit of the durians. Be that as it may, we still do get our share. Enough for us, nonetheless and to be given away to families and friends.

May all our matured trees, on both banks of the river bear fruits next year insyaAllah.

Raya Haji @ Kebun
It's always great to spend the night at D'Bayou. More so when it's over the Raya Haji break.

Getting the place ready though was quite a chore . . . mowing the grass, clearing some overgrowth, fixing the water supply, relocating gardening equipment to make space et cetera, et cetera.

All worth it, as we also managed to get 8 durians and 10 cempedaks . . . and of course, the Cucus joining us.

Repeat again next year, insyaAllah, if we can.
