Last night at Hin Bus Depot, we marked Malaysia Day with with two short films that brought us closer to the Sa’ban community in Sarawak, “Introduction to the Sa’ban Community” and “A Life Unrecorded: The Story of Cikgu Paulus Balan.”

Through the short films screened, audiences got to know more about the Sa’ban language, culture and traditions, while following Cikgu Paulus’ journey in carrying his community’s voice even after retiring as a teacher. The films also shed light on the community’s struggles and efforts to create better access to education, jobs and opportunities for the younger generation.

By bringing these stories to the screen, we can help create awareness, open up conversations and hopefully bring more attention to the communities and issues that deserve to be seen and heard.

A big thank you to Faye Lim, Paulus Balan, Joshua Parell Semion and Alasdair Clayre, and to the entire team behind the films and this event for making the evening possible.

🇲🇾 This Malaysia Day, come meet a community you may have never heard of.

CANVAS ART, with the support of Hin Bus Depot, warmly invites you to an intimate evening with the Sa’ban community from Sarawak.

✨ SA’BAN OF SARAWAK
Malaysia Day Special Screening and Q&A

Who are the Sa’ban?

One of Sarawak’s smallest Indigenous Orang Ulu communities, with only around 2,000 people across Malaysia — yet carrying stories, traditions, language and a cultural heritage that deserve to be seen, heard, and remembered.

Through two short films, we hope to bring you a little closer to their world.

And this time, the stories won’t just be on screen.

You’ll have the chance to meet Sa’ban community representatives, hear from them directly, ask questions, and connect with others who care about the many cultures that make Malaysia what it is. ❤️

Come curious. Come listen. Come celebrate Malaysia with us.
