Hacienda Santa Clara was named after Saint Clare of Assisi - the close spiritual companion of Saint Francis. Together, they founded the Franciscan movement. After the founders visited Assisi, Italy, they were moved by the story.
Yesterday was the feast day of St. Francis of Assissi, the patron saint of animals and the environment.
Throughout the grounds at Hacienda Santa Clara, depictions of St. Clare and St. Francis can be found throughout in paintings, carvings, and statues.
