Our micro-community is set on multiple acres of cactus-laden desert landscape, boasting peeking views of the Pacific Ocean and grand vistas of the Sierra de la Laguna mountains. Baljalla utilizes an onsite micro-treatment system that converts the property's wastewater streams into onsite reusable water. While not entirely off-grid, we also harness the plentiful Baja sunshine to convert to solar energy on the property. Peacefully situated between La Paz (Baja California Sur's capital) and the bustling tourist areas of Los Cabos, El Pescadero is home to Mexican agricultural families, giving rise to a hip and delicious local farm-to-table food scene. This welcoming town is conveniently nestled between two diverse surf beaches and is only 15 minutes south of the fun and artsy Pueblo Magico, Todos Santos.

A Day Here

6:42am at Baljalla. The only sound is the wind moving through the palapa above the dojo.

Tyler’s already up making coffee for whoever wanders into the shared kitchen. I’m out checking the garden — tomatoes ripening, the chickens annoyed at me as usual.

By 9 the property’s awake but quiet. Most residents are working — some at the rooftop dojo, some on their own porches, one in a hammock. WiFi works. Nobody asks where the conference room is.

Noon — surf check. Cerritos is firing today. Three of our long-termers head down. Tyler goes with them.

5pm — dinner is whoever’s cooking and whoever shows up. Tonight it’s pasta with garden basil and a bottle someone brought back from La Paz.

This is what we mean when we say “coliving.” Not amenities. Just a rhythm you fall into when you stop performing your life.

Four years ago I bought 3 hectares of old-growth desert in Baja with no real plan — just a hunch that the world needed more places where people could slow down without dropping out.
Baljalla is what we’ve built since. A small community on the Pacific side of Baja Sur, 15 minutes from Todos Santos, 3 km from Cerritos Beach. Solar power. Water that loops back into the garden. Geodesic skydomes, container studios, palapa cabañas, RV plots — different ways in for different people.
We host residents who stay 3 months, 6 months, sometimes longer. Remote workers, writers, surfers, people in transition, people who needed to remember they had a life outside their inbox.
What we’ve learned: the environment really does shape the life. Mornings here feel different. Conversations go deeper when nobody’s rushing.
