Zilo
ZILO: Heritage Stroll Festival is co-organised by Macao Heritage Ambassadors Association (MHAA) and Ieng Chi Dance Association (ICDA) since 2012. The Festival began in 2012 and has currently come to its fifth edition as a breathing and moving arts festival which continues to sense, explore, and relive the beauty of the heritage sites as we stroll along the historic district of Macao together. The theme of the current edition “Invisible Coastlines” unfolds, reflects on, and resolves to imagine our relationships with the sea around us. Starting from September 2020, the Festival has been collaborating with residents, artists, Macao Heritage Ambassadors and volunteers to explore the theme’s many facets. These collaborations will bring forth a wide range of Festival+ events together, including concerts, workshops, screenings, poetry readings, guided tours, talks and family handcraft sessions, prior to the Festival’s final presentations in mid-March 2022, which will be celebrated with site-specific dance performances, the release of the Old City Area Stroll tour maps and exhibitions of community art creations. Through recollecting the stories drifting along the waves and shores of Macao, and retracing the past coastlines embedded in present urban structures, we will look at the old and the new, the individual and the collective, the lost and the found, the dazzling and the gloomy, and reconsider the culture and discourse of Macao and its waters with you. The word Zilo is of ancient Greek origin, meaning the “zeal” for working on and committing to something one does. It symbolizes the spirit and attitude of Heritage Stroll Festival and the tenacity of the project throughout the decade. Not only does the western pronunciation of Zilo resemble the Cantonese pronunciation of “poetry path” in the project title, the shapes of the alphabets also resemble the shapes and lengths of the patios, alleys, pathways and streets in the historic district of Macao. We name the Festival Zilo to express the passion we have in realizing the vision of Heritage Stroll Festival, which is “to sense, explore, and relive the beauty of the heritage sites as we stroll along the historic district of Macao together.”
