Olivier came to Durmitor SkyCamp from Belgium. 54 years old. Hadn’t been running much. Afraid of heights and scree.
We started with poles on day one. Worked with him every single day: technique, rhythm, building confidence step by step on terrain that scared him.

By day four he was standing on a scree field with his arms wide open, grinning.
That face in slide 2 - that’s not just someone who learned a skill. That’s someone who proved something to himself.

This is what Durmitor SkyCamp is actually about. Not racing. Not performance. Learning to move in the mountains with confidence - whatever your starting point.

Most runners use poles… but almost no one uses them correctly.

Especially on steep terrain.

When the gradient gets above ~20%, you’re not “running” anymore - you’re climbing.

And this is where most runners lose energy.

They place poles too far in front or away from the body, try to pull themselves up, and end up braking their movement.

Instead:
- place poles close to your feet
- keep elbows close to your chest
- push down and slightly back
- use double pole technique on very steep sections

The goal is not to move forward.
The goal is to move up efficiently.

The steeper it gets, the more poles become tools for force production, not balance.

If your poles are in front of your knees (except for double pole technique)- you’re doing it wrong.

This is exactly the kind of technique we practice in real terrain at Durmitor SkyCamp.

Stop training in the concrete jungle and start mastering the sky. ☁️🏔️

Most trail runners hit a plateau because they train on flat ground and predictable paths. But the mountains demand a different skill set.

This is why we created Durmitor SkyCamp. It’s 5 days where your only job is to become a more capable athlete in one of Europe’s most dramatic landscapes.

What a day at SkyCamp looks like:
☕ 06:00 - Early fuel and coffee.
🏃 08:00 - Technical trail session. We master uphill efficiency and technical descending on the move with live workshops during the run.
🥗 13:00 - Free time to recover, explore, or refuel at local mountain huts.
🎓 16:00 - Daily specialized workshop: Gear, VAM metrics, or race strategy seminar.
🔥 19:00 - Dinner and trail talk.

Stop running every uphill.

One of the biggest mistakes I see in trail running is trying to run every climb.
In mountain races, efficiency matters more than ego - knowing when to run, when to hike, and how to pace the climb makes a huge difference.

Three mistakes I see very often on climbs:

1️⃣ Running every climb
Not every hill should be run.

As a simple guideline:
• 0-8% → runnable
• 8-15% → run or power hike
• >15-20% → power hike

On technical terrain, switch earlier.
Efficiency beats ego.

2️⃣ Poor body position
Many runners lean back when climbs get steep.

Instead:
• lean slightly forward from the ankles
• keep hips above your feet
• take short controlled steps
• use arms, knees or poles to push the ground

Your upper body should help you climb.

3️⃣ Starting climbs too fast
The biggest mistake.

A good reference is vertical speed:
• beginners → 400-600 m/h
• intermediate → 600-900 m/h
• advanced → 900-1300 m/h

Start the climb below your target vertical speed, then build rhythm gradually.

This isn’t a guided jogging holiday. It’s a skills-first mountain running camp built to grow your confidence on technical terrain-especially on downhills.

Mixed levels, 2-3 groups. If you run regularly and want to feel faster, safer, and more in control on rocky descents, this is your week.
