Four decades ago an initiative group of choir conductors of Klaipeda leaded by Vytautas Blušius appealed to choirs of Lithuania asking them to participate in a choir competition honorably named after Stasys Šimkus, famous Lithuanian composer. Stasys Šimkus (1887-1943) – composer, choir conductor, teacher, public-spirited person - is one of the greatest Lithuanian bards, who’s multipartite creative
work laid the foundations for the national music culture. In 1923, after the land of the Minor Lithuania had been returned to Lithuania, S.Šimkus established a music school (conservatoire) in Klaipeda. Over a span of several years there grew a whole generation of musicians, especially sidemen and choir conductors, of the young and independent Lithuania. Today the Conservatoire of S.Šimkus is continuing the vital traditions of that school. S.Šimkus’ choral creation and his fabled choir conducting work has become a standard of Lithuanian spiritual and musical self-expression. After a successful start the initiators of the first competition decided to continue the work. The historical national regeneration movement opened the new wide opportunities, which earlier were only a dream, in the choral life too. At the end of 1988 there was established a choral association “Aukuras” in Klaipėda. Under the leadership of its first chairman Robertas Varnas, the association kept on organizing the S.Šimkus choir competition. Since 1992 the competition that is launched every second year has become an international and unique event in Lithuania. Its format was gradually crystallizing and the main provisions have been settled: the prolongation of national choral singing traditions, an active integration to the international choral movement, promoting national choral works abroad (the compulsory competition pieces are the works of Lithuanian composers), propagation of a cappella singing, the two-round system of competition, the selection of 15-20 choirs participants, etc. The last competitions show the growing international attention of high qualified collectives to this choral contest. It’s very nice to notice that that best Lithuanian choirs that are participating quite richly, besides, the choirs of Klaipėda too, not once having won the highest awards, solidly represent quite high our culture of choral singing. Prieš keturis dešimtmečius iniciatyvių klaipėdiečių chorvedžių grupė, vadovaujama Vytauto Blūšiaus, kreipėsi į Lietuvos chorus, kviesdama juos dalyvauti konkurse, pavadintame garbingu ir įpareigojančiu žymaus lietuvių kompozitoriaus Stasio Šimkaus vardu. Sėkmingos pradžios paskatinti, pirmojo konkurso rengėjai ryžosi tęsti pradėtą darbą. S.Šimkaus konkursas tapo populiarus ir chorų laukiamas. Istorinis lietuvių tautos Atgimimo sąjūdis atvėrė naujas, dideles, ankščiau vien svajotas galimybes taip pat ir chorinio judėjimo baruose. 1988 metų pabaigoje Klaipėdoje įkuriama chorinė bendrija "Aukuras". Vadovaujama pirmojo jos pirmininko Roberto Varno, greta kitų veiklos barų, bendrija toliau tęsė ir S.Šimkaus chorų konkurso rengimo tradiciją. Pradedant 1992-siais, rengiamas kas antri metai, konkursas tampa tarptautiniu ir, iki pat šiolei, vieninteliu tokiu chorų konkursu Lietuvoje. Palaipsniui kristalizavosi konkurso pobūdis, nusistovėjo pagrindinės jo nuostatos: tautinio chorinio dainavimo tradicijų tąsa, aktyvi integracija į tarptautinį chorinį judėjimą, lietuvių autorių chorinės kūrybos užsienyje sklaida (konkurso privalomieji kūriniai - lietuvių kompozitorių kūryba), dainavimo a cappella propagavimas, dviejų konkurso turų sistema, 15- 20-ties chorų - konkurso dalyvių atranka ir kt. Keletas pastarųjų konkursų liudija vis didėjantį tarptautinį aukštos kvalifikacijos kolektyvų dėmesį šioms chorinėms varžyboms Klaipėdoje. Kartu malonu pastebėti, jog čia nuolat gausiai dalyvaujantys geriausi Lietuvos, tame tarpe ir Klaipėdos chorai, ne kartą pelnydami aukščiausius apdovanojimus, solidžiai reprezentuoja mūsų dabartinę gana aukštą chorinio dainavimo kultūrą.
