Lake Naivasha Riparian Association

Lake Naivasha Riparian Association The LNRA members are its custodians and are charged with a moral responsibility for ensuring its survival for future generations.

We have more than 140 members representative of the diverse economy and lifestyle around the Lake such as: Kengen, KALRO, Hotels,Ranch owners, Flower Growers, Small farmers, Cooperatives, The local Municipal council, Land owners on the shore of the lake. Founded in the 1929 by the landowners surrounding the lake, its purpose was to adjudicate the marginal land that is covered and uncovered by the

changing level of the water – The Riperian Land. Today the LNRA has put in place a management plan to control forces that threaten the lake’s quality and beauty, and its purpose is to try and implement this plan. The shoreline is almost entirely in private hands; the lake itself is a national asset and the lake is a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Kihoto is a populated informal settlement of Naivasha town, adjacent to the lake. In 2020 Kihoto flooded due to increased lake levels, caused by high rainfall.
If the forecasted El Nino for late 2023 is as heavy as suggested, Kihoto may be affected once again. This is one of the key reasons not to build on riparian land. Riparian land is land that is protected and should have no development on it, to allow for leeway for the lake to rise and receed as well as preserving the local habitat and being a corridor for wildlife to pass along the lake shore Photo 1: Kihoto today Photo 2&3: Kihoto during floods of 2020

For the past week KWS have been carrying out a giraffe relocation through the support and funding of Safari Collection and
Save Giraffes Now. These giraffe were trapped in new settlement farms on the Ndabibi plains opposite crater lake and were sadly being harassed. 12 giraffe have been moved to Loldia. Loldia is a protected area where they will be able to roam freely.
These conservation areas around the lake need to be supported, so that wildlife can continue to live in a safe environment.

A big shout out to Cresent Island Game Sanctuary, one of LNRA's members, who have started organising a clean up of the death trap fishing nets along their shores. So far they have collected 200kg of nets. Sadly these nets trap fish and birds affecting the biodiversity of the lake.

Let's all do what we can to clean up in front of our land around the lake.

If you wish to donate to the work are doing to remove these nets you can either:
1. Rent a boat and your own labour or pay for casual labour as sanctuary farm has boats for hire.
2. Send money to mpesa for fuel and casual labour: conservation till number is 9529173 Crescent Island Game Sanctuary ltd conservation fund.

LNRA joined partners and stakeholders to discuss progress made toward conserving the Eburu ecosystem. Key areas of focus included: Forest; Wildlife and Livelihoods. Positive progress has been achieved alongside a few challenges, including increased wildlife poaching.
