Maisha By Nisria runway at Nairobi Fashion Week leaned into upcycled textiles, transforming discarded materials into pieces defined by texture, construction, and intent.

Patchwork, raw finishes, and fluid silhouettes came together in a collection that felt tactile, considered, and quietly assertive.

Less about excess, more about purpose—and it shows.

"Fashion reflects more than style, it reflects impact.”

Nairobi Fashion Week Season 8 chose Decarbonize as its theme to spotlight the environmental and social realities of secondhand and fast fashion in Africa. This season was a deliberate statement: to showcase the challenges, inspire action, and position Nairobi as a leader in sustainable fashion innovation.

Through thoughtful curation and design, Season 8 captured the pulse of Nairobi’s fashion ecosystem and demonstrated how the industry can take measured, responsible steps toward a lower-carbon future.

In a season defined by Decarbonize,
VAST madebyafrica chose restraint.
Neutral palettes. Organic flow. Fluid tailoring.

A collection that breathes intentional in form and grounded in design clarity.

Decarbonize was not just a concern but a direction.
VAST reflected that shift through conscious design language rooted in simplicity and quiet power.

This is the evolution of African fashion, grounded, intentional, and globally relevant.

The recent BRICS+ Fashion Summit, held in Moscow earlier this month marked a significant turning point for the global fashion industry. One of the Key highlights highlights of the summit was the ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. SUSTAINABLE FASHION AND LOCAL SOLUTIONS panel discussion which Nairobi Fashion Week participated.

We all get dressed every day, and our clothes and textiles represent rich cultures, crafts and communities. But fashion is a major contributor to climate change and companies are not doing enough to set and meet ambitious climate targets. We have the power to take action and hold fashion brands accountable for their environmental impacts.

Policy makers and investors also have important parts to play in these efforts. Governments and regulators should promote sustainable practices and conscious consumption, and provide incentives to support decarbonisation measures with high abatement potential. Investors can make their contribution by encouraging decarbonisation initiatives, emission transparency, and sustainability-focused innovation among the fashion companies in their portfolios.

The outcome from the panel discussion was for brands to promote sustainable and eco-friendly practices while striving to implement transparent methodologies that will significantly reduce the fashion industry's carbon footprint.

True fashion respects the Earth. Sustainable fashion is more than a trend—it’s a responsibility.
Sustainable fashion isn’t just about eco-friendly fabrics or trendy buzzwords. It’s about rethinking the way we create, consume, and value clothing. The fast fashion industry thrives on waste, overproduction, and exploitation, but we have the power to change that. By choosing sustainability, we’re not only protecting the environment but also supporting fair labor practices and promoting innovation.

Each garment we wear has a story—let's make sure it's one of responsibility, ethics, and respect for our planet. Fashion doesn’t have to cost the Earth. 🌍♻️
