130 years ago, the gold-laced hills of a once-quiet farmland were transformed into a bustling metropolis we know today:

Joburg - Jozi - The City of Gold

A perplexing tapestry of various cultures, peoples, ecosystems and industries - Joburg, like much of South Africa, is informed by a diverse and complex history.

Apartheid-era policies aimed at segregation have now blossomed into beautiful neighbourhoods like Soweto and Alexandra. Even though the scars of inequality remain, a visit to these towns will reveal a world brimming with colour and life.

Take a short trip outside of these urban hubs, and you might find yourself in a quiet suburb, a nature reserve, or maybe on one of the beautiful koppies (koh-peas; hills) that decorate the landscape like freckles.

Joburg is also the country’s economic hub: Hilbrow and Sandton form two of the city’s wealthiest business districts. Watch the streets and notice how executives, hustlers, hawkers and workers are all in constant motion - signs of a city that never rests.

You will find everything to do and no time to do any of it. It is awesome, infuriating, and endlessly gorgeous.

Welcome to Jozi.

The 1st of May signals Worker's Day: a day when South Africans commemorate the efforts of workers in fighting for equality 🇿🇦

🫂 Workers, unions and other labour organisations played a crucial role in dismantling apartheid : throughout the 20th century, various groups - left-wing and conservative - united in demonstrations, protests and strikes that were critical in the fight against racial discrimination

In 1995, the 1st of May was celebrated as a public holiday for the first time following the historic 1994 general elections, where the right to vote was granted to South Africans of all backgrounds 📨

Today, we celebrate the enormous efforts of brave workers across the country - and the world - who continually stand against injustice ✊

🌍🌐 PS: Did you know that over 160 countries celebrate Worker's Day on 1 May?

Today, South Africans celebrate 32 years of democratic freedom. On the 27th of April 1994, the country held its first open elections 🇿🇦

At voting polls, people of all creeds and colours turned out in droves - overwhelmingly in support of the dismantling of the apartheid framework 🗳️

As we strive to move ever closer to a open and inclusive society, we remember Nelson Mandela’s words regarding freedom:

"For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others" 🫂

Pap or mieliepap (pronounced me-lee pup) is a staple food for many South Africans, and beloved by all our peoples. Many of our cultures have their own spin on the simple mielie-meal (ground maize) dish.

Pap is a common breakfast food; butter, milk and sugar are often served alongside pap which, once mixed in, make a delicious porridge which goes by many names depending where you’re from:

- Isidudu in Xhosa/Zulu
- Vuswa in Venda/Tsonga
- Um’ratha in Ndebele
- Ugali in Swahili
- Bogobe & Mabele in Setswana

But there’s another way to make pap you need to know: when cooked with less water, the pap forms into dry balls that can be served as a side food for the braai - perfect for absorbing extra sauce and flavour. Dryer pap also has a few different names, depending where you’re from:

- Phuthu in Zulu
- Krommelpap in Afrikaans
- Umphokoqo in Xhosa and Ndebele

Hold on though, because there’s more pap! If you cook it for longer with more water, you get stywepap (stafe-pup; “stiff pap”) which has a firmer texture, making it another great braai-side.

Pap can also be fermented to give it a sour flavour:

* Vhuswa in Venda (which has a more crumbly texture)
* Ting in Setswana

Here are some more braai essentials that can join the pap on your plate:

- Boerewors (bura-vors) - the iconic sausage made with minced meat combined with spices like coriander, cloves, and nutmeg. It’s often served in a bun, which is called a boerie roll (boory roll)
- Morogo (more-raw-gho) - the delicious, green, gooey side that’s made of wild African spinach that’s cooked with onions, tomatoes and seasoning.
- Chakalaka (chukka-lucka) - the vegetable relish that began in the townships is now enjoyed across the country: it consists of onions, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, and a distinct mix of spices.

Stay tuned for more monthly munchies coming soon!

Public Holiday Alert! 📢🚨

🇿🇦 21 March marks Human Rights Day in South Africa. 🇿🇦

Mzansi is known for its world-class Bill of Rights, enshrined in the constitution, which aims to protect the human rights of its citizens. Historically this day commemorates the infamous Sharpeville massacre, but 30 years later, the day commemorates a commitment to the progress made in protecting Human Rights.

At the 2nd Africa Scout Moot, participants will be able to enjoy learning more when visiting Soweto, the site where many brave citizens fought for their human rights. ⚜️
