PFF extends its deepest condolences on the passing of Mr. Tony Rayns, British film critic, filmmaker, and programmer for the Vancouver, Rotterdam, and other film festivals.
Nearly half a century ago, he made it possible to bring 8mm Japanese independent films to international film festivals.
Captivated by the films of Kenji Mizoguchi from a young age, he devoted his life to traveling alone throughout Asia, discovering and introducing independent and experimental films from Japan and other East Asian countries to the world.
We express our deepest respect and gratitude for his boundless curiosity and his generous support of emerging talents who were still unknown.
May he rest in peace. We hope to carry his passion forward for future generations.
