Flamenco Jazz Festival Japan – Gala Highlight
Recorded live at the historic Kencho-ji Temple in Kamakura, the oldest Zen temple in Japan, this performance captures the essence of flamenco jazz in one of the most evocative settings imaginable.

This highlight features excerpts from the festival’s central Gala concert, where leading figures of contemporary flamenco jazz came together for a singular artistic encounter.

At the centre of the festival was the Gala Concert at Kencho-ji Temple, the oldest Zen temple in Japan. The concert offered a thoughtful encounter between flamenco and jazz in a setting of remarkable calm and acoustic clarity.

Recognised for his work in the exploration of flamenco language through modern jazz piano, Alex Conde has developed an approach shaped by both tradition and contemporary improvisation. His training in Valencia, New York, and Berklee College of Music, together with collaborations in the international jazz scene, have shaped a musical identity grounded in structure, rhythm, and creative dialogue.

A focused look at Reinier Elizarde “El Negrón” and his contribution to the first edition of the Flamenco Jazz Festival Japan. His presence throughout the week offered a clear example of the depth, precision, and musical awareness that characterise his work, shaping the ensemble’s sound with clarity and purpose.

The festival’s Gala Concert at Kencho-ji Temple — the oldest Zen temple in Japan — stands as one of its defining moments. In this setting, El Negrón’s bass anchored the ensemble with restraint, musicality, and an understanding of the dialogue between flamenco and jazz.

Born in Santa Clara, Cuba, and long established in Spain, Reinier Elizarde has become a key figure in the evolution of contemporary flamenco jazz. His approach combines Cuban rhythmic sensibility with a deep familiarity with Spanish traditions, resulting in a voice that is both grounded and highly adaptable.
