The world connected by “Poupelle of Chimney Town”
Akihiro Nishino x Tomoya Shinmachi
The picture book "Poupelle of Chimney Town" by Akihiro Nishino became a huge hit and was later made into a movie. Tomoya Shinmachi, an entertainment producer and a Myanmar resident, has published the picture book in Burmese, thinking that the story could be something useful for the youth in Myanmar. He has launched a crowdfunding campaign, and now he is distributing the translated books to children in Myanmar.
We will hear from Mr. Nishino, who has intrigued Mr. Shinmachi and many other readers through his work, what the importance of continuing to challenge things even in uncertain times. The interview will also unveil his thoughts on his work and message to Burmese children who read the picture book.

Akihiro Nishino
Akihiro Nishino Born in 1980 in Japan, Akihiro Nishino is a children's book author. His works include beloved picture books such as "Dr. Ink's Starry Sky Cinema", "Zip & Candy: A Robot Christmas", "Music Box Planet”, "Poupelle of Chimney Town”, “Poncho of the Bookstore", "Tick Tack: The Clock Tower of Promises", and "Marco", all of which become bestsellers in Japan. In December 2020, Nishino made headlines as the screenwriter and executive producer of the animation film "Poupelle of Chimney Town", which became a massive hit. The film received the Excellent Animation of the Year award at the Japan Academy Prize, was nominated for the Feature Film category at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and garnered acclaim internationally. “Poupelle of Chimney Town” has been expanded beyond film to include musicals, kabuki, ballet, NFT, and many other business and expressive activities.
Tomoya Shinmachi
An entertainment producer in Myanmar. He has lived in Yangon, Myanmar's largest city, for 10 years. General Manager of MAKE SENSE ENTERTAINMENT CO., LTD.
His short comedy film "One Bowl of Mohinga," a collaboration of Japanese and Myanmar staff, was nominated at the Myanmar Wattan Film Festival and has since won awards at film festivals around the world. He continues his career in Myanmar as an entrepreneur, singer, and actor. He writes serialized articles for World Voice as a Japanese representative in Myanmar.
