🇬🇧 HORSE WELFARE: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

Over the last few years, the FEI has introduced quite a few changes aimed at improving horse welfare. And no, not all of them were designed to make athletes, lungers, judges and organisers lose sleep at night.

Free Tests became shorter to reduce physical and mental strain. Research on side reins led to adjustments in their use, while the introduction of three-point reins provided an additional option to support a more horse-friendly connection. After each performance, side reins must now be released before leaving the arena, reminding everyone that welfare does not end when the final pose is struck.

Perhaps the most visible change in scoring is the inclusion of Harmony and Consideration of the Horse, now accounting for 20% of the Artistic score. In other words: spectacular acrobatics are great, but they should always be performed in partnership with the horse rather than despite the horse.

Horse inspections, stewarding, veterinary controls, equipment checks and ongoing monitoring throughout events have also become increasingly important. The message is clear: success is not only measured by what happens on the horse, but also by how the horse experiences the sport.

Or, to put it with a gentle smile: the horse has become even more central to the sport than before. Which seems quite reasonable, considering it has always been the most important partner in the arena.

🇮🇹 BENESSERE DEL CAVALLO

Negli ultimi anni la FEI ha introdotto numerose modifiche per migliorare il benessere del cavallo: prove più brevi, nuove regole sulle redini laterali, introduzione delle redini a tre punti, maggiore attenzione ai controlli veterinari e agli steward.

Anche il punteggio si è evoluto: Armonia e Considerazione del Cavallo valgono oggi il 20% del punteggio Artistico.

Perché nello sport equestre la performance conta, ma il partner più importante rimane sempre il cavallo.

We know. The horses know. The grooms know. The sun knows.

Some horses are already considering a sit-in protest, others are negotiating for extra carrots, and a few are pretending they suddenly forgot how to walk.

Unfortunately, the timetable remains unimpressed.

🇮🇹☀️ 25°C, cielo azzurro, clima perfetto… e sì, prima che qualcuno lo chieda: l’Ispezione Veterinaria resta alle ore 14:00. 😎🐴

Lo sappiamo. Lo sanno i cavalli. Lo sanno i groom. Lo sa perfino il sole.

Alcuni cavalli stanno già organizzando una protesta seduti per terra, altri stanno trattando per una razione extra di carote, e qualcuno finge improvvisamente di non ricordarsi più come si cammina.

Purtroppo il programma non sembra particolarmente colpito da tutto ciò.

🇬🇧 2:00 PM – Horse Inspection 🐴

Also known informally as the “Vet Check”, this is where veterinarians assess whether each horse is fit to compete. That means more than just physical soundness—it also includes mental well-being, vaccinations, passports, and all required paperwork.

The veterinarians advise the President of the Ground Jury, who makes the final decision. If there is any doubt, a horse may be sent to the Holding Box for a more detailed examination.

And no, this is not the only check of the weekend. Throughout the event, horses are continuously observed by veterinarians, stewards, officials, and during every entrance into the competition arena.

Basically: the horses need to prove they are ready to compete… and the humans need to prove they brought the right paperwork. 😉

🇮🇹 Ore 14:00 – Horse Inspection 🐴

Conosciuta informalmente anche come “Vet Check”, è il momento in cui i veterinari verificano che ogni cavallo sia idoneo a competere. Non conta solo la condizione fisica, ma anche quella mentale, oltre a passaporti, vaccinazioni e tutta la documentazione richiesta.

I veterinari esprimono il loro parere al Presidente di Giuria, che prende la decisione finale. In caso di dubbi, il cavallo può essere inviato alla Holding Box per un controllo più approfondito.

E no, non è l’unico controllo del fine settimana. Durante tutto l’evento i cavalli vengono osservati da veterinari, steward, ufficiali di gara e ad ogni ingresso in campo.

In pratica: i cavalli devono dimostrare di essere pronti a gareggiare… e gli umani di aver portato tutti i documenti giusti.
