And here is the final reveal.

We are proud to announce the Overall Winner of the World Water Day Photo Contest 2026 🏆💧

“Water’s role in gender equality – where water flows equality grows”

“The Lake” by Masoud Mirzaei 🇦🇹
Shot at Lake Urmia, Iran

“Lake Urmia, once the largest lake in the Middle East, has vanished, leaving behind a silent and barren landscape. What was once water and life has turned into absence and stillness. For me, this place is no longer just a geographical location, but a metaphor for loss, fragility, and the traces of what humanity has failed to protect.”

A powerful and symbolic image that speaks beyond borders, reminding us of what is at stake when water — the foundation of life — disappears.

A sincere thank you to the international jury for their dedication and careful evaluation:

“Bita Gelefa village” by Érico Hiller 🇧🇷 shot in Ethiopia

“Climbing up the stairs in this tank holding the gallon is an unimaginable operation that demands balance and strength. Some women do this over and over again four or five times a day. One small problem leads to another, and all the chain of water demand generates unknown challenges we will never be able to learn.”

“Sentinels” by Supratim Bhattacharjee 🇮🇳

“Pallavi Padua, 11, stands before her family’s tea shop in Frazerganj, Sundarbans, destroyed by storm surges after Cyclone Amphan. Once near the early 20th-century residence of Bengal’s Lieutenant Governor, it now faces crashing waves. During Super Cyclone Yaas, the area—named after Sir Andrew Fraser—also lost the century-old Fort Fraser, once a landmark for tourists visiting Bakkhali and Frazerganj beaches.”

A huge thanks again to our distinguished jury for their dedication in selecting these outstanding submissions:

“The Wings of Pollution” by Şebnem Coşkun

💭 “UNDP Türkiye ‘Defender of Life in Water’ and world free-diving record holder Şahika Ercümen dived into the Marmara Sea in Balıkesir, Türkiye, on May 24, 2025, to raise awareness about mucilage. The phenomenon is linked to rising sea temperatures, untreated waste discharge and limited water circulation. Despite cleanup efforts since the 2021 outbreak, experts report that mucilage continues to reappear periodically.”

“Floods in the Amazonia.” by Musuk Nolte 🇵🇪

“Luzmila Picota (68) lives in the intercultural settlement Nueva Era. In March 2025, the Yarinacocha Lagoon flooded her home after extreme rains hit Pucallpa. Like many Amazonian women who sustain their families, she rescued what she could and moved to higher ground, where she now shelters with her grandson and sister. As climate extremes intensify, women bear a disproportionate burden in the face of displacement and loss.”

“Hygiene in a failed state” by Michel Pedrero 🇪🇸

“A Mundari boy bathes in cow urine at a cattle camp near Juba, South Sudan. Among the Mundari, cattle dominate every aspect of life. In a country where conflict and state collapse have left millions without access to clean water, cow urine remains a means of basic hygiene. Access to clean water, healthcare and basic services is among the lowest in the world. For rural communities like the Mundari, survival is shaped not by protection, but by the absence of the state.”
