Open Sound A Land Music Experience | Reliving Origins

Behind “THE PLOT”, an original Open Sound Academy performance, commissioned to (an offshoot of .exe) and curated by .

This conversation takes a behind-the-scenes look at the audiovisual performance presented on 28 December, during the closing day of the 2025 Open Sound Festival, at Castello del Malconsiglio in Miglionico, Basilicata.

Set in a room tied to Congiura dei Baroni, as it preserves a vivid depiction of the occurrence — a 15th-century turning point in Southern Italian history — the project draws directly from this historical context.

“THE PLOT” combines samples from the Lucanian marching band tradition with deep dubstep and bass-driven rhythms, while the visuals immerse the audience in a distorted past as seen through the eyes of a medieval peasant.

During Open Sound Festival 2025, our stages in Matera and Miglionico lit up with a wide diversity of acts — this is how we believe our echo-system can thrive, by embracing a expanding spectrum of voices, sounds and spirits.

’s live embodied this philosophy, bringing one of the most acclaimed contemporary underground bands into the evocative setting of Casa Cava, carved into the rocky heart of Matera.

20 dicembre 2025, Aula Magna dell’Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro: “Staying with the bass frequencies: through sonic archives and electronic flesh” a cura di Open Sound Festival e Uniba – Corso di Media, cultura visuale e sound studies.

.sound at for the opening night of Open Sound Festival 2025

For the first act of Open Sound Festival 2025, we came together at Thyme, an under-the-ground space carved from an ancient tufa quarry, where we danced late into the night to Bassolino’s records selection.

Moving from songs rooted in the historic Neapolitan tradition, through his own productions, to electronic sounds such as those of Franco Falsini, Bassolino’s dj set provided the perfect musical journey to celebrate the beginning of the festival.

in Miglionico last December for Open Sound Festival 2025.

A curated mental selection, shaped by mesmerizing percussion and an array of beautifully intertwined sonic pulses, seamlessly flowing into one continuous soundscape - all while intuitively reading the room and responding in real time.

That’s how we experienced upsammy’s DJ set that night: a profound immersion into her hypnotic techno, where dubbed-out rhythms carried us deeper with every passing moment.

Loefah in Miglionico last December for the closing party of Open Sound Festival 2025.

It might have seemed surreal to have a figure of this stature in a small, remote town in the depths of Basilicata, but it was all true — the Don of South London and UK dubstep legend stepped behind the decks, doing what he’s best known for: locking the dancefloor in front of a huge DIY sound system.

Forever blessed for this.

Napoli Balla, a book by Gennaro Ascione: during Open Sound Festival 2025, we hosted the author at in Matera for an overview of his work, followed by a conversation with Bassolino and Domenico Conte.

If you have read the book, as we have, you will agree that it’s impossible to summarize it in just a few lines. In this masterpiece on the ontology of musical culture, Prof. Ascione meticulously analyses the developments and anecdotes of the Neapolitan underground, starting from the post-war period when the term ‘underground’ didn’t yet exist, but its essence already did.

This is not a stereotypical book about the underground. Ascione doesn’t focus on excesses, but explores the spontaneous cultural practices that, over the decades, have defined eras, generated movements and, in many cases, saved lives through music.

Many artists have graced the stages of Open Sound Festival 2025 last December, yet it was a particular honour for us to host the Italian première of Circled Dot, performed by and .

What we have witnessed was an audio visual performance that guided us through the therapeutic potential of sound: the screen, populated with written words and unidentified creatures, while smoke and strobe lights accompanied the sonic journey, created an all-encompassing effect that pervaded the entire auditorium.
Definitely a cerebral experience.

“The Plot” is an audiovisual performance commissioned by Open Sound Academy to Studio Gleba, that took place in Castello del Malconsiglio during the last edition of our festival.

The location is no coincidence, but rather the primary source of inspiration for this project.

Together with the curatorship of , (an offshoot of .exe) built up this remarkable performance, which originates from ‘The Barons’ Conspiracy’ – a historical event that took place in Castello del Malconsiglio in the late Middle Ages, sparking a revolt that changed the fate of southern Italy.

The live performance gave us a glimpse into a hypothetical past, allowing us to experience an interpretation of the historical event through the eyes of a medieval peasant, where sounds from the local tradition blended together with dubstep sequences.
