As we leave 2025 behind, we look back at what made this year truly special.

In 2025, the Sardinia Symposium reached its 20th edition — a milestone for the first international conference ever held on waste recycling, and for a community that has been discussing, questioning, and advancing these topics for nearly four decades.

This year was truly special thanks to everyone who took part in it:
those who shared their work, those who challenged ideas, and those who helped build an open and constructive space for dialogue.

Thank you to everyone who made this year what it was.

In music we unite. 🎤🕺
The traditional Karaoke Night is the moment in the week when everyone loosens up a bit.
An international community meeting for real — no badges, no roles. Just people being people.
A simple kind of humanity that says a lot about what the Sardinia Symposium is.

One of the most interesting exchanges of the Sardinia Symposium 2025: Sardinia and South Africa proposed a comparison on how climate shifts are reshaping wine production through the VIN4FUTURE project — a theme that, at the Sardinia Symposium, naturally connects with the blend of scientific, environmental and territorial perspectives needed to understand how climate pressure interacts with local ecosystems and productive landscapes.

The contrast between the old vines of the Cape Floral Kingdom and the Sardinian context set the stage for the Guest Country viticulture experts. They answered questions from the room and explained with technical clarity how changes in water stress, soil practices, and varietal choices affect vineyard behaviour and production outcomes.

The session became a moment of genuine cross-pollination and exchange, culminating in a convivial tasting of Sardinian and South African wines.

An Active Lab fully aligned with the Symposium’s multidisciplinary paradigm: competences and cultures brought together to illuminate the many dimensions of climate adaptation across sectors.

Not every lesson comes from a lecture.
At Sardinia 2025 delegates have become part of the system itself — simulating the shift from a linear to a circular economy, making policy choices, negotiating, and watching how every decision reshaped the whole. Through Gamification techniques, they learnt to recognize stakeholders' needs across the value chain and address them optimally.
A Serious Game that turned theory into experience, and reflection into play.
And they had fun, which doesn't hurt.

This game is being developed within an Indo-Swedish consortium research project BioCircularR - Towards Zero-Waste through Bio-based Circular Recovery Model – Lessons for Managing Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste from Sweden and India (BioCircularR).

Same spirit, new island.
During Sardinia 2025, we were glad to welcome Leonardo Costagliola and Salvatore Scotto di Rinaldi, official representatives of SUM Procida 2026 together with Titta Lubrano, who joined the Opening Ceremony and contributed to the week’s dialogue.

The SUM Symposium on Circular Economy and Urban Mining will take place from 20 to 22 May 2026 on the island of Procida (Naples, Italy), continuing the same paradigm that Eurowaste Srl brings to all its events: where grounded environmental science, people, and experience meet to advance multidisciplinary solutions and real-world applications.

Those who joined us in Cagliari already know what it means — a week of ideas, exchange, and that unique atmosphere that makes this community so special.
Same spirit, new island. See you at SUM 2026. 👉https://www.sumsymposium.it/

Pragmatic, collaborative, and (finally) international.
That's what Eleonora Perotto, co-coordinator of the RUS Working Group Resources & Waste, said about the workshop “Efficiency of Waste Management
Policies in Universities”.
“Universities play a naturally important role in waste management — especially in the prevention phase. We were able once again to share good practices, but also
the daily challenges we face at the university level. It was a pragmatic space of dialogue — and that’s what we all look for.”

A discussion that brought together researchers from Italy and abroad to shape shared tools for a better management of this topic in the future.

During the Closing Gala Ceremony of the Sardinia Symposium, the President of the RAS - Regione Autonoma della Sardegna , Alessandra Todde, presented the “Life for Waste 2025” Award to Prof. Thomas Højlund Christensen (Danmarks Tekniske Universitet - DTU).

This biennial recognition stands among the most prestigious international awards in the field of waste management and circular economy. It honours those who, through a lifetime of research, have transformed scientific vision into models and technologies that have revolutionized waste management worldwide.

Prof. Christensen has dedicated his career to understanding how we can manage society’s waste in ways that protect the environment and support the green transition. His pioneering research on landfill behaviour, incineration residues, organic waste treatment, and the environmental impacts on soil and groundwater has shaped how countries worldwide deal with waste safely and sustainably.

Through his work, waste has been redefined — from a problem to a resource — providing the scientific foundation for circular systems where materials and energy are recovered rather than lost.

We were honoured by the presence of the President of the Region of Sardinia and proud to celebrate such an esteemed colleague, whose career truly embodies the values of the Sardinia Symposium itself: scientific excellence and long-term vision.
