La scoperta arricchisce le conoscenze sull’arte e la vita nell’antica città greca della Ionia sulle pendici del Latmo: mosaici con animali, coccodrilli, delfini, fenicotteri e anguille, che offrono nuovi dettagli sulla rappresentazione degli animali nell’antichità. Nel frigidarium delle terme, ovvero la parte dove si facevano i bagni freddi, si trovano ben sei raffigurazioni di coccodrilli rivolte l’una verso l’altra. Tuttavia, questa zona non è molto adatta alla vita del coccodrillo, per cui il maestro che ha lavorato in questo luogo potrebbe essere stato un maestro itinerante.

The discovery enriches our knowledge of art and daily life in the ancient Greek city of Ionia, located on the slopes of Mount Latmus: mosaics depicting animals, including crocodiles, dolphins, flamingos, and eels, offering new insights into animal iconography in antiquity. the mosaics uncovered in the frigidarium—the cold bath section of the thermal complex—feature depictions of crocodiles, specifically six crocodile figures facing one another. However, as this region was not a natural habitat for crocodiles, it is likely that the artisan who created these works was a traveling master craftsman.
