Next up in our series of BIG 2026 exhibitions: Muddy Dance.
Muddy Dance celebrates the movement of football. Through a selection of football photographs, Erik Kessels shifts the focus from the ball to the players’ movements: by erasing it from each image, he transforms the actions on the field into casual choreographies of twists, falls and suspended gestures.
An act of re-appropriation of vernacular photography that brings the beauty of footballers’ movements to the fore, transforming one of the world’s most popular sports into a true art form.

The exhibition will be open to the public during the museum’s regular hours through November 8, 2026.

We’re continuing to reveal the exhibitions coming to BIG 2026.
BookShock presents itself as a critical device: a place where the book, in its multiple forms, makes it possible to examine the conditions of contemporary cultural production and the ways in which it is transmitted.
For the first time, the exhibition presents, alongside artefacts and printed copies, a selection of immaterial books generated through artificial intelligence, capable of surprising and redefining the very concept of the book.
The exhibition will be open to the public during the museum’s regular hours through November 8, 2026.

We are trilled to announce the third exhibition to be featured at BIG!
Alfabeti Modernisti Italiani, curated by Luca Lattuga in collaboration with Fabrizio Falcone - Type designer
The exhibition stems from research begun fifteen years ago by Lattuga, which culminated, in November 2025, in the publication of the book Alfabeti Modernisti Italiani, published by Lazy Dog Press. An exhibition dedicated to these particular typefaces and their history, curated using original materials drawn almost entirely from his personal archive, supplemented by a number of reproductions, taking visitors on a journey through the chapters of the book – and beyond.
Furthermore, thanks to the collaboration with CAST, which has revitalised a selection of 25 typefaces from this collection, it will be possible to appreciate the unique work behind the transition from the original typefaces to digital fonts.
More than 120 alphabets designed and produced between the late 1920s and the 1940s, when visual culture in Italy broke definitively with the decorative style and ornamentation of Art Nouveau to move towards a rational simplification of forms: pure geometries, clean volumes, elementary harmonies. This modernist period is evidenced not only by the well-known graphic works of its leading figures, but is also documented by significant peripheral – though by no means secondary – developments. Compared with the international scene of the time, Italy occupied a marginal position in the production of typefaces. Yet a more in-depth investigation reveals a far more complex and varied picture: a multitude of typefaces that have now been forgotten.
A one-of-a-kind exhibition featuring a wealth of previously unseen material.

The exhibition will be open to the public during the museum’s regular hours through November 8, 2026

LETTERS, GEOMETRY, MODERNITY.
In 1927, Paul Renner’s Futura was released: a typeface based on the circle, triangle, and square, and designed to give typography a modern form.
Ten years later, Guido Modiano wrote in the well-known magazine Campo Grafico about Futura as the “archetype of today’s typefaces”: the starting point for endless variations that changed the face of typography and, consequently, the aesthetics of graphic design.
The Nebiolo type foundry, based on designs by Alessandro Butti and Giulio Da Milano, produced the Semplicità series, creating one of the most widespread and successful typefaces of the period, which remained in production until the 1970s.
However, the purity and utopian ideals of rationalist principles would clash with market demands. The rigor of these linear, geometric typefaces would be complemented by the production of a myriad of “advertising” typefaces, developed for commercials and to enrich—with a decorative touch—compositions often deemed too austere.
It is precisely here that Alfabeti Modernisti Italiani opens up an interesting perspective: what happens when that modern geometry enters the workshops of local typeface producers?
A vast number of diverse, vernacular typefaces emerge, often designed in places far removed from the major design circuits.

Editorial design is often discussed through typography, grids and layout.Yet every book begins somewhere else. In its format. In the paper it is printed on. In the way it opens, bends and occupies space. Before we read the text, we encounter the object.

-
