Yesterday at LAB02 the 9DF Shake Table subjected a full-scale partition system to progressive seismic loading from the 2016 Norcia earthquake.The test is part of the ERIESIW2026 programme.

Ieri, martedì 26 maggio, ricercatori e partecipanti del Workshop Internazionale ERIES si sono riuniti al LAB02 per assistere all'avviamento di una delle più avanzate strutture di prova sismica d'Europa.

Nel corso di tre giorni, il workshop ha riunito ingegneri specializzati in ingegneria sismica, ingegneria eolica e ingegneria geotecnica da tutta Europa per presentare i risultati del progetto ERIES, un'iniziativa di quattro anni finanziata dall'Unione Europea sulla ricerca sperimentale nella resilienza e nella sostenibilità.

Nel pomeriggio di ieri, la Tavola Vibrante a nove gradi di libertà, un sistema a doppia tavola vibrante unico nella sua configurazione, ha eseguito una sequenza di carico sismico progressivo su un campione di partizione non strutturale in scala reale. Il campione rappresentava un'installazione completa di un room-in-room, tipica degli ambienti d'ufficio contemporanei. Il test ha utilizzato dati accelerometrici dal terremoto di Norcia del 2016 (Mw 6.5), applicati attraverso successive corse a intensità crescente, culminando nel collasso strutturale. I dati in tempo reale hanno documentato la transizione dalla risposta elastica all'accumulo di danno fino al cedimento.

Oggi, 27 maggio, il workshop si conclude, con la sintesi di tre giorni di ricerca, discussione e innovazione.

Today marks the beginning of ERIES-IW2026. Three days of groundbreaking research in earthquake engineering, wind engineering, and geotechnical engineering converge in Pavia. Join us from 25 to 27 May for the concluding event of the ERIES project.

L'ERIES-IW2026, International Workshop in Engineering Research Infrastructures for European Synergies, inizia ufficialmente oggi, segnando un momento cruciale per la ricerca ingegneristica europea.

Ospitato dalla Fondazione Eucentre e dal Collegio Nuovo a Pavia dal 25 al 27 maggio, il workshop riunisce la comunità transnazionale di ricercatori, professionisti e partner istituzionali che hanno guidato il progetto ERIES negli ultimi quattro anni.

L'evento presenterà progressi senza precedenti in ingegneria sismica, eolica e geotecnica attraverso lezioni magistrali di esperti di fama internazionale, dodici sessioni parallele specializzate e una dimostrazione sperimentale dal vivo presso il nostro 9DLAB all'avanguardia. Come ultima pietra miliare del progetto ERIES, il workshop serve a sintetizzare gli insegnamenti principali, rafforzare la collaborazione tra le infrastrutture sperimentali europee e dimostrare il contributo duraturo della ricerca transnazionale alla resilienza e alla sostenibilità dell'ambiente costruito.

The ROSE PhD programme in Earthquake Engineering jointly awarded by Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia and Università degli studi di Pavia is accepting applications for the 2026–2027 cohort. The three-year programme commences on 1 October 2026 and offers nine fully-funded scholarships, with partnerships established through the Department of Civil, Environment and Geomatic Engineering at University College London UCL, Inail, Fondazione Eucentre and GEM - Global Earthquake Model.

Based in Pavia, Italy, the programme combines a two-decade research legacy with an international faculty network. Doctoral candidates engage with advanced coursework in earthquake engineering, structural analysis, and risk assessment whilst contributing to ongoing research initiatives across partner institutions.

ROSE School Pavia opens a new course today: Nonlinear Response Analysis, led by Professors Rui Pinho and Giammaria Gabbianelli.

From 7 May to 9 June 2026, over six ECTS credits, students of the Advanced Master's in Earthquake Engineering will engage with the full spectrum of advanced nonlinear analysis and computational modelling: reinforced concrete and steel frame structures under cyclic and seismic loading and discrete element approaches to structural collapse simulation under extreme conditions.

A new course begins today at ROSE School.

Nonlinear Response Analysis, led by Professors R. Pinho and G. Gabbianelli, opens on 7 May and runs through 9 June, six weeks, 6 ECTS credits, and one of the most technically comprehensive programmes in the Advanced Masters curriculum.

The course takes students deep into the modelling of structures under strong earthquake ground motion and other extreme loading conditions. Reinforced concrete frames, steel structures, and discrete element approaches to structural collapse are each addressed in dedicated sections, with a consistent emphasis on both rigorous theoretical foundations and hands-on implementation using advanced software tools.

From fibre sectional analysis to incremental dynamic analysis, from buckling of thin-walled steel sections to applied element modelling of masonry and bridge collapses, the course covers the full breadth of contemporary nonlinear structural analysis.

Fifty years ago today, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy, killing more than 900 people, injuring thousands, and destroying or severely damaging over 130,000 homes across the provinces of Udine and Pordenone. A second major shock followed on 15 September 1976, prolonging a seismic sequence that lasted several months.

The human cost was devastating. The professional and institutional legacy, however, proved transformative for earthquake engineering on a global scale.

The reconstruction challenge imposed technical requirements without precedent, making specialist training not an academic option but an operational necessity. The model that emerged from that effort, participatory, technically rigorous, and respectful of cultural heritage, became internationally known as the "Modello Friuli" and remains one of the most studied cases in post-disaster recovery. At the institutional level, the earthquake directly accelerated the approval of Law No. 225/1992, establishing Italy's national Civil Protection Service, a structural reform with lasting relevance for seismic risk governance worldwide.

Fifty years on, the Friuli earthquake is not merely a chapter in the history of the discipline. It is a reference point for how the global earthquake engineering community understands the relationship between scientific knowledge, professional practice, and the resilience of built environments.

Italy remains one of the most seismically active countries in Europe. Seismic risk does not diminish with time. The response demanded by that reality, sustained investment in research, structural resilience, and the continuous training of professionals capable of translating knowledge into safe buildings and communities, is precisely the work the world's earthquake engineering community exists to advance.

The 18th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering brought that community together in Milan in 2024. The conversation continues.
