Da 48 anni, a Martina Franca, in Puglia, ogni estate si svolge un Festival che si è imposto per scelte inusuali e coraggiose e per la qualità degli artisti che ne hanno arricchito i cartelloni. Adagiata sulle colline sud orientali della Murgia, Martina Franca è una città barocca che gode di splendide vedute sulla Valle d’Itria, tra filari di vite, boschi e ulivi secolari. tival si è contraddistinto, sin dalla sua nascita, per la riscoperta di titoli operistici e pagine musicali rare o sottovalutate, per la cura delle versioni integrali e delle edizioni critiche e per la fedeltà agli intenti dei compositori. Dal 1980, con la presidenza di Franco Punzi e la direzione artistica di Rodolfo Celletti, grande esperto di vocalità, il Festival ha accentuato la sua identità originaria di rivalutazione del repertorio belcantista e della Scuola musicale napoletana di cui grandi protagonisti furono i compositori pugliesi, pur senza trascurare il grande repertorio europeo e, in particolare, la valorizzazione di elementi del belcanto italiano presenti in opere di autori stranieri. Alberto Triola, che ha assunto la direzione artistica del Festival nel 2010 dopo Sergio Segalini (1994-2009), ha riportato l’attenzione sul repertorio belcantistico e sul teatro musicale barocco, ma con importanti aperture all’opera del Novecento e contemporanea. Il Festival della Valle d’Itria ha ottenuto per nove volte l’ambito riconoscimento del Premio Abbiati dell’Associazione Nazionale Critici Musicali. The Festival that has been running every summer for the last 48 years in Martina Franca, in the region of Apulia, has become famous thanks to its unusual and bold choices, and for the quality of the artists that have filled its seasons. Located on the southwestern hills of Murgia, Martina Franca is a baroque town gifted with beautiful views on the Valle d’Itria, resting among vineyards, woods, and centuries-old olive trees. Created in 1975, the Festival has always stood out for selecting forgotten operas and rarely performed pieces of music, for full version performances and critical editions, and for its adherence to the composers’intents. From 1980, under the presidency of Franco Punzi and artistic direction of Rodolfo Celletti – a leading voice specialist – the festival reaffirmed its original identity as a re-evaluation of the bel canto repertoire and the Neapolitan School, whose greatest stars were Puglia-born composers, without neglecting the vast European repertoire and, in particular, the appreciation of Italian bel canto elements in the work of non-Italian composers. Alberto Triola took the helm as artistic director of the festival in 2010 (after Sergio Segalini’s period 1994-2009) and refocused attention on the bel canto repertoire in Baroque opera, while also planning to extend the festival’s horizons to include twentieth century and contemporary works. ✨ Il Festival della Valle d’Itria 2026 si apre all’incontro tra linguaggi artistici diversi, portando in scena un progetto speciale, commissionato dal Festival al M° Marco Baliani.

📌 Il 20 e 21 luglio, alle ore 21:00, nel Chiostro di San Domenico a Martina Franca, andrà in scena 𝑽𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒐 𝒅𝒂 𝒐𝒈𝒏𝒊 𝒅𝒐𝒗𝒆. 𝑵𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒂𝒓 𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂̀ 𝒊𝒏 𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒐.

Uno spettacolo in cui teatro, musica, canzoni e racconto si intrecciano intorno al tema del viaggio per mare: un viaggio che può essere transito, fuga, ricerca, speranza di approdo.
Tra memorie antiche e repertori più contemporanei, il mare diventa voce, racconto e testimonianza delle umanità in cammino e delle sue passioni.

✨ The Festival della Valle d’Itria 2026 opens itself to the encounter between different artistic languages, bringing to the stage a special project commissioned by the Festival to Maestro Marco Baliani.

📌 On 20 and 21 July, at 9:00 p.m., in the Chiostro di San Domenico in Martina Franca, 𝑽𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒐 𝒅𝒂 𝒐𝒈𝒏𝒊 𝒅𝒐𝒗𝒆. 𝑵𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒂𝒓 𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂̀ 𝒊𝒏 𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒐 will be staged.

A performance in which theatre, music, songs and storytelling intertwine around the theme of the journey by sea: a journey that can be transit, escape, search, or hope for a safe landing.

Between ancient memories and more contemporary repertoires, the sea becomes voice, story and testimony to humanity on the move and its passions.

✨ Una prima rappresentazione in tempi moderni. Anche quest'anno, nel cartellone 2026 del 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐝'𝐈𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚, un grande ritorno del 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐨.
La rappresentazione de "Il schiavo di sua moglie", di Francesco Provenzale, restituisce al presente una delle pagine più significative del teatro musicale napoletano del Seicento.

Provenzale è infatti uno dei grandi nomi della musica napoletana del XVII secolo e con la sua opera non ci parla soltanto del suo tempo. Porta in scena dinamiche che continuano a interrogarci, dal potere domestico ai ruoli sociali, dalle tensioni al contrasto tra apparenza e verità. E lo fa attraverso l’ironia, che nel teatro napoletano del Seicento è strumento sottile di osservazione critica e che qui viene calata in un universo di guerre e amori, tra Amazzoni ed eroi del mito.

Dentro il tema di questa edizione, "Mediterraneo", quest’opera rivela così un volto profondamente umano e teatrale, fatto di relazioni, conflitti quotidiani, gerarchie, contraddizioni e comicità.

The staging of Il schiavo di sua moglie by Francesco Provenzale brings back to the present one of the most significant pages of seventeenth-century Neapolitan musical theatre.

Provenzale is one of the great names of seventeenth-century Neapolitan music, and his opera does not speak only of its own time. It brings to the stage dynamics that continue to question us today: from domestic power to social roles, from underlying tensions to the contrast between appearance and truth. And it does so through irony, which in seventeenth-century Neapolitan theatre becomes a subtle tool of critical observation, here set within a world of wars and loves, between Amazons and mythical heroes.

Within the theme of this edition, Mediterraneo, this opera thus reveals a deeply human and theatrical dimension: a space shaped by relationships, everyday conflicts, hierarchies, contradictions and comedy.

💫 With Carmen, the Festival della Valle d’Itria does not simply return to one of the most iconic titles in the history of musical theatre, but chooses to do so by bringing to the stage, for the first time, its original version: the 1874 version.

Fin dalle sue prime edizioni, il 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐝’𝐈𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚 ha accolto a Martina Franca alcuni tra i nomi più importanti della scena lirica internazionale. From its very first editions, the Festival della Valle d’Itria welcomed to Martina Franca some of the most important names on the international opera scene. Since its historic first edition in 1974, the Festival established itself as a place capable of attracting great artists within a space where prestige, quality and vision meet.

🎼 Between 1975 and 1977, the Festival stage hosted several particularly significant female voices, from Renata Tebaldi to Viorica Cortez, and from Grace Bumbry to Lella Cuberli. Different artists, all testifying to the strength of a festival that, from the very beginning, has built a living relationship with great music and its leading figures.

🎼 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞: 𝑳𝒂 𝑭𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒍𝒂 𝒅𝒊 𝑶𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒐

Da un lato abbiamo il mito, una delle matrici più profonde dell’immaginario mediterraneo, da cui la nascita dell'opera stessa trae ispirazione. Nei secoli a ve**re l'opera si allontana progressivamente dal mito, trovando nuove forme di espressione musicale.

Dall'altro lo sguardo di Casella che nel 1932 sceglie di tornare al mito nella sua forma antica, essenziale, profondamente legata alle origini del teatro musicale. In questa visione trova spazio la figura di Orfeo, che rappresenta il legame tra arte e destino, tra perdita e desiderio.

Nella sua opera, "La Favola di Orfeo", Casella riporta al centro questo legame ma in una nuova chiave, pienamente novecentesca. Il risultato, dal punto di vista della scrittura e della sensibilità artistica, non è un semplice recupero del passato, ma una rilettura che fa dialogare la forza archetipica del racconto mitico con il pensiero musicale del XX secolo.

Con 𝐋𝐚 𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐚 𝐝𝐢 𝐎𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐨, il Festival ci invita così a entrare in uno spazio in cui 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞 e 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞 non si oppongono, ma si completano a vicenda.

On the one hand, there is myth, one of the deepest roots of the Mediterranean imagination, from which opera itself first drew inspiration. Over the centuries, however, opera gradually moved away from myth, opening itself to new forms of musical expression.

On the other hand, there is Casella’s perspective: in 1932, he chose to return to myth in its ancient, essential form, one deeply connected to the origins of musical theatre. Within this vision, the figure of Orpheus takes shape as a symbol of the bond between art and destiny, loss and desire.

In La Favola di Orfeo, Casella brings this bond back to the centre in a new, fully twentieth-century key. From the point of view of writing and artistic sensibility, the result is not a simple recovery of the past, but a reinterpretation that places the archetypal power of myth in dialogue with twentieth-century musical thought.

With La Favola di Orfeo, the Festival invites us into a space where tradition and innovation do not stand in opposition, but complete one another.

Ieri al Teatro del Maggio, si è tenuta la cerimonia di consegna del 45° Premio della critica musicale “Franco Abbiati”, assegnato dall’Associazione Nazionale Critici Musicali. Un appuntamento di grande rilievo per la scena musicale, quest’anno reso ancora più significativo dal ricordo di Angelo Foletto, maestro della critica musicale italiana, a cui l’edizione 2025 del Premio è stata dedicata.

Una serata speciale per il Festival della Valle d’Itria, a cui è stato conferito il premio come miglior Iniziativa Musicale con l'opera Owen Wingrave di Benjamin Britten, presentato in prima italiana nella scorsa edizione del Festival. Un premio consegnato alla nostra direttrice artistica, Silvia Colasanti.

Un percorso artistico che riflette con chiarezza la visione della Direttrice Artistica Silvia Colasanti e riafferma il valore dell’arte come veicolo d'eccellenza per interpretare il presente.

Last night, at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the 45th Franco Abbiati Prize ceremony took place, presented by the Associazione Nazionale Critici Musicali. A major event for the musical world, made even more meaningful this year by the memory of Angelo Foletto, a leading figure in Italian music criticism, to whom the 2025 edition of the Prize was dedicated.

It was a special evening for the Festival della Valle d’Itria, which received the award for Best Musical Initiative for Owen Wingrave by Benjamin Britten, presented in its Italian premiere at last year’s Festival. The prize was presented to our Artistic Director, Silvia Colasanti.

“With the Italian premiere of Benjamin Britten’s Owen Wingrave, the Festival della Valle d’Itria accomplishes an act of high artistic value. Andrea De Rosa’s essential staging, Daniel Cohen’s analytical conducting, and a cast of great expressive unity conveyed the composer’s pacifist vision, giving life to a performance of strong dramatic tension and rigorous theatrical construction.”

These are words that fill us with pride and recognise not only the quality of the production, but also the cultural vision that defines the identity of the Festival. An artistic path that clearly reflects the vision of Artistic Director Silvia Colasanti and reaffirms the value of art as an outstanding means of interpreting the present.

🎼 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞: 𝑷𝒖𝒍𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒂

Quella di Stravinskij con la sua opera "Pulcinella" è un’operazione affascinante e profondamente moderna: partendo dal passato, dalle musiche attribuite a Pergolesi, Igor Stravinskij trasforma, reinventa e costruisce quello che viene definito un vero e proprio esempio di “falso antico”.

Il punto non è imitare fedelmente un linguaggio del passato, ma usarlo come materia viva da reinterpretare. Il passato non viene trattato come un modello intoccabile, ma come qualcosa che può essere osservato da una prospettiva diversa, riportato alla luce con un significato nuovo. Stravinskij guarda a una tradizione musicale riconoscibile, ne accoglie forme, equilibri e suggestioni, e allo stesso tempo la rilegge attraverso una sensibilità nuova, novecentesca, fatta di distanza, precisione e libertà inventiva.

In questo gesto troviamo una delle intuizioni più forti del Novecento musicale: guardare al passato e inventare un modo nuovo di interpretarlo. E così, attraverso Pergolesi, Stravinskij apre una strada originale, in cui memoria e reinvenzione convivono.

Quest'opera, che compone un dittico insieme a La Favola di Orfeo, inaugurerà la 52esima edizione del Festival.

🎼 Tradition and Innovation: Pulcinella

Stravinsky’s Pulcinella is a fascinating and deeply modern operation. Starting from the past, from music attributed to Pergolesi, Igor Stravinsky transforms, reinvents and shapes what has often been described as a true example of a “false antique.”

The point is not to imitate a language of the past faithfully, but to use it as living material to be reinterpreted. The past is not treated as an untouchable model, but as something that can be viewed from a different perspective and brought back to light with new meaning. Stravinsky looks at a recognisable musical tradition, embraces its forms, balances and suggestions, and at the same time rereads it through a new, twentieth-century sensibility, marked by distance, precision and inventive freedom.

In this gesture we find one of the strongest intuitions of twentieth-century music: looking to the past and inventing a new way of interpreting it. Through Pergolesi, Stravinsky opens an original path in which memory and reinvention coexist.
