Looking for things to do in Abruzzo?
Yesterday we visited Zoo d'Abruzzo, near Rocca San Giovanni, and it's a great option if you're looking for something a little different from the usual beaches, mountains and villages.
There are lots of different animals to see, plenty of space to walk around and it's particularly worth considering if you're visiting Abruzzo with children.
We're going to start sharing more ideas for things to do across Abruzzo .. from family days out and places to visit, to walks, villages, food and some of the lesser-known places we've discovered.
Have you been to Zoo d'Abruzzo?

Today we visited the Church of St Francis in Lanciano, home of the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano.
According to Catholic tradition, in the 8th century a monk celebrating Mass experienced a transformation of the consecrated bread and w**e into what the Church venerates as human flesh and blood.
The relics are still preserved here today, displayed in the church for visitors to see.
Whether you come for faith, history or simply curiosity, standing in front of something with such a long and extraordinary story is quite a moment.

Not the view you usually see, but where is it? ❤️

High up in the Gran Sasso, we came across this tiny little chapel.
There isn't much around it, just mountains, open countryside and the road winding through the landscape.
I walked all the way around it, taking in the little details and the views, and it was one of those unexpected stops that makes exploring Abruzzo so enjoyable.
You never quite know what you'll find around the next corner.

There’s something about walking through woodland like this.
Huge old trees covered in ivy, dappled sunlight coming through the leaves and everything feeling just a little bit wild and untouched.
One of the things I love about living in Abruzzo is that you don't always have to go somewhere famous to find beautiful places. Sometimes they're just along the path on an ordinary walk.

The lake is fed by underground springs so fresh, clean water is constantly flowing through it. The water stays very cold all year round, which also limits algae and plant growth.

The result is extraordinary visibility, you can see right down into the water and, in places, see the remains of old mills beneath the surface.

One of those places in Abruzzo that looks almost unreal, but is completely natural.

A walk all the way around the fountain in Capestrano.
It's the little details like this that I love finding when we're exploring the villages of Abruzzo... old stone, water, beautiful craftsmanship and a place that's part of everyday village life.
Capestrano is a small village in the province of L'Aquila, surrounded by the mountains of Abruzzo.
Sometimes you don't need a famous landmark. Just slow down and look around.

The Gran Sasso around Pizzoli, Abruzzo.
Mountain roads, wide open valleys and landscapes that seem to go on forever.
This is the side of Abruzzo that keeps making us want to get back in the car and see what's around the next corner.

Eat well, live well.
One of the things we love about living in Abruzzo is the incredible variety of fresh food that's part of everyday life .. seasonal fruit and vegetables, good olive oil, beans, pulses, bread, pasta, cheese and so much that's grown or produced locally.
Food here isn't usually about complicated recipes or following a trend. It's about good ingredients, cooked simply and enjoyed with other people.

There's something very appealing about that way of eating.

Just our every day drive home from Casoli to Gessopalena.
No sightseeing trip, no special destination... just the roads we use as part of everyday life, with the Abruzzo countryside unfolding around us and stunning views of the Maiella.
One of the things we still love about living here is that even an ordinary journey can come with views like these.
