International Violin Competition "Premio Paganini" Genova La 57^ edizione del "Premio Paganini" si terrà a Genova dal 16 al 27 ottobre 2023.

Il Concorso Internazionale di Violino "Premio Paganini" fu fondato nel 1954 per realizzare una competizione violinistica a livello internazionale che desse grande prestigio a Genova e permettesse di scoprire nuovi giovani talenti. Il Concorso è tra i fondatori della Federazione Mondiale dei Concorsi Internazionali di Musica di Ginevra dal 1957. www.premiopaganini.it

The International Violin Competition "Premio Paganini" was founded in 1954 to create a Violin Competition with an international scope that would bring great prestige to the City of Genova as well as provide a venue fordiscovering new, young talents. The Competition has been a founding member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions in Geneva since 1957. 57th International Violin Competition "Premio Paganini" will be held in Genova from 16th to 27th October 2023. www.premiopaganini.it

🎼🎻 The jury of the 59th Premio Paganini: Roman Simovic

Roman Simovic’s brilliant virtuosity and seemingly innate musicality, fuelled by a limitless imagination, have taken him to stages across all continents, where he has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras.

Simovic is a Visiting Professor of Violin at the Royal Academy of Music in London and has extensive experience as an educator. His discography includes four CDs with the London Symphony Orchestra String Ensemble for the LSO Live label, as well as a recording of Paganini’s complete Caprices for solo violin.

He has served as Leader of the London Symphony Orchestra since 2010.
Roman Simovic plays a 1709 Antonio Stradivari violin, generously loaned to him by Jonathan Moulds.

🎼🎻 The jury of the 59th Premio Paganini: Akiko Suwanai

Akiko Suwanai is an internationally renowned Japanese violinist. In 1990, at the age of 18, she became the youngest-ever winner of the First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition.

Suwanai also won Second Prize at the Premio Paganini Competition in 1988 and at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 1989, and is a laureate of the Music Competition of Japan.

She has enjoyed a flourishing international career, performing in chamber music and recitals and collaborating with leading orchestras and conductors worldwide.
Until 2019, Akiko Suwanai played the 1714 Dolphin Stradivarius, on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation. After returning the instrument, she received the “Charles Reade” Guarneri del Gesù on loan from Japanese collector Ryuji Ueno.

🎼🎻 The jury of the 59th Premio Paganini: Ida Kavafian

The American musican Ida Kavafian is internationally recognized as both a violist and violinist. An artist-member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and a former member of the Beaux Arts Trio, she has built a distinguished career as a performer, educator, and artistic director.

For 34 years, she has served as Artistic Director of Music from Angel Fire in New Mexico, where around 200 Curtis students have taken part in the Young Artist Program. She also founded the Bravo! Colorado festival and was its Artistic Director for ten years. Her work in chamber music includes co-founding the ensembles Opus One, Tashi, and Trio Valtorna. She regularly performs as a soloist and in recitals with her sister, violinist Ani Kavafian.

Born in Istanbul to Armenian parents, she graduated from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Oscar Shumsky. Her professional debut came through Young Concert Artists alongside pianist Peter Serkin, and she was also awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant.

Since 1998, Kavafian has been a faculty member at the Curtis Institute of Music, where she received the 2013 Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching. She also teaches at the Juilliard School and the Bard College Conservatory of Music.

🎼🎻 The jury of the 59th Premio Paganini: Mauro Bucarelli

Mauro Bucarelli is Artistic Coordinator at Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he has worked closely with renowned conductors including Daniele Gatti, Christian Thielemann, Myung-Whun Chung, Antonio Pappano, Daniel Harding, and many others. A musicologist, he studied piano, composition, arts and humanities in Rome and has also taught music history.

His professional experience includes working at the Treccani Encyclopaedia and serving as a consultant for RAI Radio 3’s classical music channel. He has also carried out research for the Fondazione Rossini in Pesaro, where he worked with Bruno Cagli, and for the University of Chicago, collaborating with Philip Gossett on the new critical edition of Rossini’s complete works.

His expertise also extends to musical iconography, an area in which he has contributed to numerous exhibitions. Among his projects, he curated the transformation of Rossini’s birthplace in Pesaro into a museum. Together with designer Pier Luigi Pizzi, he was also scientific coordinator of the exhibition Rossini 1792–1992, held in Pesaro with the support of the European Cultural Commission.

A prolific writer and essayist, Bucarelli has written programme notes for major opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York and La Scala, as well as for leading record labels.

🎻🎼 The jury of the 59th Premio Paganini: Ju-Young Baek

Violinist Ju-Young Baek has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and has collaborated with leading orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. She is also a great chamber musician.

A laureate of several major international competitions, Ms. Baek has been awarded at the Indianapolis, Paganini, Sibelius, Long-Thibaud, and Queen Elisabeth International Competitions. Her international career gained momentum after she won first prize at the Young Concert Artists (YCA) Auditions in New York City and the Astral Artists National Auditions in Philadelphia.

In 2020, on the occasion of Beethoven’s 250th birth anniversary, she became the first Korean violinist to record and release all of the composer’s violin sonatas. In 2022, she completed another major recording project with the release of Ysaÿe’s complete sonatas for solo violin.

Since 2024, Ju-Young Baek has been a designated Larsen Strings Artist, officially supported by the renowned Danish string manufacturer.

🎻🎼 The Jury of the 59th Premio Paganini: Francesca D**o

Italian-American violinist Francesca D**o is celebrated worldwide for her compelling interpretations and flawless technique.

She is Artist in Residence at London's legendary Wigmore Hall for the 2026/27 season.

She regularly performs with leading orchestras and conductors, including Fabio Luisi, Philippe Herreweghe, Daniele Rustioni, John Storgårds, Gemma New, Michele Mariotti and Xian Zhang, and is an acclaimed chamber musician, collaborating with artists such as Gautier Capuçon, Jan Lisiecki, Salvatore Accardo, Mischa Maisky and Francesco Piemontesi.

An exclusive Chandos Records artist, her award-winning discography includes concertos by Busoni, Brahms, Mozart, Paganini and Wolf-Ferrari, as well as Beethoven's violin sonatas and Paganini's Caprices. Passionate about contemporary music, she has premiered and inspired works by leading composers, and in 2025 launched "Feathers in Time", commissioning ten new solo violin works inspired by the poetry of her father, Giuliano D**o.

A regular contributor to international music publications, Francesca is also the author of Tra le Note. Classica: 24 chiavi di lettura, published by Mondadori.

She performs on a fine Antonio Stradivari violin on loan from J & A Beare.

🎼🎻 We are thrilled to introduce the Jury of the 59th Premio Paganini, starting with its Chairman, Ning Feng

Winner of the 2006 Premio Paganini, Ning Feng has built an outstanding international career, performing across Europe, Asia and Australia with leading orchestras including the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, LA Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony, Frankfurt Radio Symphony and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, collaborating with renowned conductors such as Jaap van Zweden and Iván Fischer.

A regular guest at London's Wigmore Hall and the Kissinger Sommer Festival, Ning Feng has recorded Bach's complete solo violin works, alongside concertos by Tchaikovsky, Bruch, Elgar and Finzi, as well as a wide-ranging chamber music repertoire.

Born in Chengdu, China, he studied in Chengdu, Berlin and London, graduating from the Royal Academy of Music with the first-ever perfect final recital score. Before winning Premio Paganini, he also received top prizes at the Michael Hill, Queen Elisabeth, Yehudi Menuhin and Hanover International violin competitions.

🎼🎻 We are pleased to introduce Ulf Wallin, who will lead the masterclass held in collaboration with Conservatorio Niccolò Paganini, taking place in Genoa from 22 to 25 October 2026 as part of the Ottobre Paganini Festival.

Ulf Wallin studied in Stockholm with Sven Karpe and in Vienna with Wolfgang Schneiderhan. His artistic collaborations include conductors such as Manfred Honeck, Paavo Järvi, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Franz Welser-Möst, as well as renowned musicians including Bruno Canino, Barbara Hendricks, Heinz Holliger and Roland Pöntinen.

A passionate advocate of contemporary music, he has worked closely with composers such as Anders Eliasson, Alfred Schnittke and Rodion Shchedrin.

He has performed at major festivals and in some of the world's leading concert halls, including the Berlin Philharmonie, La Scala in Milan, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Wigmore Hall in London and the Musikverein in Vienna.

Professor of Violin at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin and at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, he has also served on the juries of leading international competitions. In 2013 he received the Robert-Schumann-Preis der Stadt Zwickau and in 2014 he was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
