Choosing the right electric is not just a matter of load capacity.

It means understanding which safety category applies to your specific use case and why getting it wrong is not only a technical risk, but a regulatory non-compliance with serious consequences.

In the entertainment industry, three classification levels define how hoists can and cannot be used:

🔹 D8: for static rigging during setup, with no people present below the suspended loads.

🔹 D8+: for permanent suspensions above people throughout the event, without dynamic movement.

🔹 C1: the only category that permits dynamic load movements above people in real time during the show. Requires SIL3 compliance and a dedicated control system.

These classifications are defined by BGV/DGUV standards, now integrated into EN 17206 - the harmonised European standard specifically for lifting systems in entertainment.

Together with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, they form the regulatory framework every professional rigger needs to know.

For those operating in , Legislative Decree 81/2008 adds further obligations: INAIL commissioning registration, documented quarterly inspections, mandatory annual overhaul for hoists above 200 kg, and operator training.

Cannot maintain suspended loads above people without secondary safety systems.
We’d recommend if you work in load-in with the area below unoccupied during operations.

The next level. Allows loads to remain suspended above people throughout the event, without additional systems.
Dual independent brakes, reinforced chain, 8:1 safety factor.
We’d recommend if lights, audio, or scenic elements remain in the air with the audience present.

🔹 Divo C1
The top of the range. The only hoist that allows real-time load movements above people during the performance.
Dual brakes, load monitoring, position and speed control, SIL3 compliance.
