Peter Slade, a pioneer in drama education, emphasized the importance of child-centered creative play in his approach to children's theatre and drama. In his seminal work, Child Drama (1954), he argued that:

1. Children’s Theatre Should Be Rooted in Play – Slade believed that children's theatre should emerge naturally from their instinctive play and creativity rather than being imposed by adult structures. He saw drama as a way for children to express themselves authentically.

2. Drama is a Developmental Tool – He viewed drama as a means of personal and social development rather than just a performance-based activity. He distinguished between "Child Drama" (where children express themselves through spontaneous play) and "Theatre for Children" (formalized theatre performed for children). He considered the former more crucial for their growth.

3. Process Over Product – Slade prioritized the process of drama rather than the final theatrical performance. He believed that children benefit most from the experience of engaging in drama rather than from producing polished plays.

4. Freedom of Expression – He argued that children’s theatre should not impose rigid adult expectations but should instead respect their imaginative freedom, emotions, and ideas.

5. The Role of the Teacher/Facilitator – Instead of being a director, the teacher should act as a facilitator, creating an environment where children feel free to explore and develop their creative potential.

His ideas greatly influenced Drama in Education (DiE) and later developments in Theatre in Education (TiE). His work laid the foundation for viewing drama as a child-centered and educational practice rather than just a performance art.

Drama in Education (DiE) is a teaching approach that uses drama techniques to enhance learning across subjects. It engages students through role-play, storytelling, and improvisation, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and empathy. Rather than focusing on performance, DiE emphasizes process, exploration, and experiential learning. It creates an interactive, immersive environment where students actively construct knowledge.
